Subject: Shift kit... IP: Logged
Message:
I am planning on putting a shift kit in my 93 dakota. I'm not going to do it because of the fact that there is some drilling and I'm not real fond of drilling holes in the valve body on my transmission. Now I've called around to a few of our local transmission shops. I've asked them about sticking a shift kit in my truck. Both of the transmission shops frowned on sticking the shift kit in over the shift improver kit. They both agreed that they shift improver kit is a good idea. This is why they said that I shouldn't put the shift kit in. The shift kit acts on pressure and creates a harder shift. That in turn creates such a hard shift that over time, the transmission will actually begin to fall apart. Now with the shift improver kit, it acts on allowing more transmission fluid into the tranny but not by creating more pressure. This all makes since. What are your feelings on it?

Message: Ive had similar probs with dakotas in my shop. WIth the shift kit installed it will eventually tear the transmission up due to the increase is pressure. The shift improver kit I cant really tell ya much about, most of the people ive done transmissions for tell me to put the shift kit back in, they like catching 2nd gear :). But on the NV3500 trannys ive not had any complaints, too bad the 3.9s came with the Ax-15.

Message: Wait, let me correct somthing, I was thinking manual, the NV3500 and AX-15s are manuals. Sorry for the confusion. But the autos in the v-8 dakotas i've not seen probs with. I guess the guys with the v-6's give them more heck.

Message: The reprogramming kit will be more a shift improver kit. It will allow you to change shift points etc. If thats what it is (actually going into the computer to change things) no major adverse effects will be noticed. THe only prob. with a true shift kit (the ones that require the plates and check balls to be removed etc.) is that the harder hitting shifts is caused by more fluid pressure to the clutch packs. The problem with this is these transmissions were not designed to take the punishment they are given. So basically if your wanting to "improve" your shifts ie. higher shift points, then the imporver kit would be a good choice. But if you want that real hard hitting gear changes go with a true shift kit. Yes transmission life is affected by the true shift kits no matter what the companys tell you, but the transmissions i've had to replace due to a shift kit had them installed for a good amount of time. Also think, the actual shift kit is there all the time, no matter if your running it hard or doing daily driving, so no matter what its still going to give you hard shifts even if your putting.

Message: I would say that the transgo reprogramming kit would be more of a shift improver kit too. It's just the idea of forcing the fluid into the transmission versus creating more lubrication. When you put in a shift kit it will allow you to sqawk them in 2nd. I'm leaning towards the shift improver kit, $35 versus $100 for a shift kit, not to mention hopefully longitivity out of the transmission.
