Message: Hey everyone! I need some help. I have a 97 3.9L Dak. I have been having some problems with my truck stalling. Sometimes it will stall after driving it for a while and then coming to a stop. Or sometimes when I go to park my truck and I pull in and put it in Park it will just sputter down and die. I brought it to the dealer and they said that it was my fuel pump, and I needed new plugs/wires, cap, rotor, belt, and a new "AIS Motor". Does anyone know what an AIS motor is? I was thinking maybe they meant the idle air control valve. I figured that since it didn't happen too often i could let it go a while and see if it keeps doing it... so i just had them change the fuel pump which is a warranty part. So, last week I was driving and I took a corner and then after the corner it died. I can usually start it right back up but this time it didn't. I couldnt get it started. I had to push it to a parking lot and then later that night i had a friend come and tow me back to my place. Then the next day I decided to go to auto zone and get the stuff necessary for the tune up like the dealer said. So I did all the tuneup stuff and I even put a new idle air control valce on (even though i dont know if that is what i was supposed to change since dealer said AIS motor). After all that stuff it started right up and was running good. Well know that you know the background here is the problem....
I was driving today and I was going about 35-40 and all of a sudden my truck seemed to start bogging down. I thought that maybe I was losing a cyclinder and was only running on 5 but then I got my "umph" back. Then a little later i heard a loud clunk and I THINK my truck died while i was driving, the exhaust quieted down but the wierd thing was that my rpm's stayed normal, but I had no throttle response. Then a few seconds later my exhaust started going and i got my throttle back.
Now after I rev up the engine, after i let off the gas, my truck seems to have a lot more back fire sound to it. It is loud and deep(kinda sounds nice! lol) I don't have any clue what is going on! Someone help please

Message: just did a search on google and the AIS motor is the automatic idle speed motor that keeps the engine from stalling when the rpm drops too low at idle. try www.minimopar.knizefamily.net/idleproblems.html for more info.

Message: posible plenium leak
but first check the fuel presure 40 to 50 pounds
and should hold it for a few hours.
The pumps as they age will sometimes run
intermitently usualy act up at 1/2 tank or lower
because with a full tank they run cooler
Remove IAC back of throttle body and spray hole
on tb and iac pluger off with carb cleaner put a
little oil on o ring and reinstall.
start let idle shut off, start let idle shut off
these 2 cycles will learn the idle.
check your TPS drivers side TB center wire + and
a good ground key on engine off should be .35 .75
closed go up as you open the throttle and always
return to low volts when closed
But it does sound like the fuel pump going out

Message: But I just had the fuel pump replaced 4 months ago. I just changed the IAC and did a full tune-up including cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and belt. I am going to take off the IAC again though so I can clean the throttle body and see if that helps any.
One more thing....When I got my fuel pup replaced they recommended a "BG Flush". I asked them what it was and they said it was a flush of the fuel injectors. What do you think about that?
Thanks Larry

Message: i would still check the cat. when the engine starts to cut out check to see how your exhaust is coming out the tail pipe.
for that BG Flush, how much? you could buy a new and better set of injectors from five o motorsports for about 180 bucks.

i would still check the cat.
check out www.fiveomotorsports.com
for my '00 3.9 w/ 21# injectors the BOSCH design III are 180 for the set. matched within 2% instead of factory 15%. 4 hole design instead of factory 1 hole.(better atomization of fuel) for 55.05 + shipping more than the flush. factory injectors prolly cost ya about 80 bucks each.

" noisier " exhaust sounds as if something
blown = maybe nice for sound
But probably upsetting PCM
Probably running richer = low mpg

CAT ?
Muffler ?
original problem , fuel pump / dirty sensor ??

Message: not-so-badassdak,
I just went through this same problem with my '94 Dak. A fuel pump replacement fixed mine (knock on wood!).
This behavior is somewhat of a "known problem" with the Daks (esp. high mileage ones), but the good news is there is likely one of only a few causes. As always, the comments by Larry above are spot-on -- he is a Dakota genius who helped me (and everyone else) out a lot.
As he noted, checking the fuel pressure (esp. when it is in "non-starting" mode) is critical.
Other areas to check:
Known electrical junction corrosion problem:
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v6/4553.html
Make sure crank position sensor is clean and gunk-free.
Check all the normal ignition components: cap, rotor, battery terminal connections, etc.
Again, I agree that it sounds a lot like a fuel delivery problem, especially if you have a high-mileage truck and if the problem seems worse with a low (less than half) tank.
Are you SURE your pump got replaced?
HTH.
Bob
