Message:
Has any one seen this problem? I have a 99 3.9L 4x4 Dak. When I am driving at 60 MPH with my cruise on I can fell a VERY suttly shudder or surge and my RPM's jump from 1800 to 2000 RPM. I take off the cruise and it goes away. I have noticed this at different speeds and it always seems to jump 200 to 300 RPM's. It is usually only for a sec but on occasion it lasts as long as 3 sec or so. Also when idling if I turn my wheels at a complete stop my truck's RPM's drop to something like 300 RPM's. It picks back up soon after I move the wheel I was just wondering if this is normal.

Turning your wheels while the truck is stopped will cause your RPMs to drop because the power steering pump puts a load on your engine.

The surge at highway speeds doesn't sound quite normal.

Luke:

I had the very same problem (99 V6 Auto), It is
the TPS (throttle position sensor).

While under cruise (or not) at 60-75 mph, on
flat freeway it would surge just like yours.

TPS!

the lockup torque converter could be unlocking and locking. are you runnin on a dead flat road or are you going up hills, even slight ones when it happens, if going up & down hills its the torque converter.

You're both right. TPS is one of the things that determines converter lock/unlock. Luke, it's probably the TPS, very common. $25 part, easy 2-minute fix.

Thanks all. I just tryed to adjust my TPS to .75v a few day ago and now this is happening so I will check it out. It was happening on flat roads. Is this something I can get at NAPA or autozone, or do I have to go a dealer?

Dealer price is about $70.00, I saw one at either AZ or NAPA for around $30.00.

make sure that when you install the new one, you cock it 20 deg. clockwise first, then place it in position and turn it back to line up the holes. that 'preloads' the 2 tabs that work with each other.
