Subject: ABS Question/Problem? IP: Logged
Message: 99 Dak Sport V6 Reg cab 2x4. Bought it last Monday, tuesday had a freak snow storm (Columbus). Anti lock breaks locked up when I tried to stop. Ive had antilocks b4 so I know how they should work. Almost hit a parked car. No ABS or Brake lite came on, no other warning lights. Today, took it to dealer where I got it, tests didnt show anything.
Any ideas, comments, suggestions??

Message: 2 wheel ABS or 4 wheel? My '04 DAK is only rear wheel ABS for stability, nothing for the front.

Message: Standard ABS on the daks is 2 wheel... your fronts still lock up, but like Tippy said, the rears won't and the ABS will make sure they stay in the rear. Personally I hate ABS...I'd rather hit something knowing I was trying to stop (i.e. skidding, sliding sideways, etc) rather than plowing into something because my brakes didn't feel like they were even working.

Message: kind of on the same subject. I've got a 93' 2X4 and just the other day I noticed that when I almost come to a complete stop, it makes a weird creaking or grinding sound and the pedal pushed out. I don't know a damn thing about mechanics but something tells me this should not be happening. I asked a few people about it and they said I need new brakes and rotors. before I go to some auto parts store or mechanic and ask him what I need (set myself up to get raped) I thought I might ask anyone here if they know what I need so I can fix this problem.
thanks alot.
p.s. about how much would it cost, if I put them on myself. . .?

Message: Do it urself its not hard at all and very cheap. If u feel u need help get a haynes manual the pics are enough to go from
If it costs anything like a lincoln then it will be $100 worth of parts using ceramic brake pads and all new rotors.
If u are going keep the drums or rotors make sure to sand them until u see a fresh metal surface. I recommend using a dremel or die grinder with a sanding drum.

Message: EricB, i have an '00 QC w/ rear ABS only and at times the rears WILL lock up. it's usually when i go to make the first stop of the morning. any other time the ABS will kick in but unlike any other system in a vehicle i have driven. it seems the ABS cycles really slow. my son's '93 saturn has 4 wheel disc w/ABS and i guarantee you cannot lock the wheels up. it will stop. my wife's '99 Gran Prix GT is the same as the saturn. must be a DC thing.

Mine does that too usually after sitting for a while when it's been damp/rainy...any idea why? It's real embarrassing when I've been parked somewhere all day and when I am going down the aisle and tap the brakes to simply slow down they totally lock up and look like I made a panic stop.

Message: Josh, i wish i knew. everything in my braking system seems to be in proper working but, it will lock up only after sitting either overnight or all day at work, around 9 to 10 hrs or more. cold , hot, damp, dry it's always the first stop. after that it's fine.

Message: The locking-up is cause by a combination of things. Mainly due to moisture in the brake pads/shoes causes them to swell slightly and "grab" better, and your rotor/drum will oxidize a little bit, which adds to the grabbing effect.
