Subject: Ticking IP: Logged
Message: Im getting ready to go insane. I got a bulit 3.9 thats got about 17,000 miles, just finished the engine last July. Ive tried to get rid of this ticking sound its been making since about 12,000 miles. I've put 2 sets of lifters in it as well as new pushrods, and adjusted the crower roller rockers about a dozen times, still there. The sound is only at about 2500 rpm and idle, anywhere else its quite. Its not an exhuast leak, i know that for certain, and its not a rod knock or timing chain i also know that for certain, but the sound is driving me up a wall, any suggestions are appreciated.

Message: I would be it is the timing chain. What makes you so sure that it is not the chain? IF you installed the stock chain....forget it, it is junk from what I understand.

Message: NOTHING on this engine is stock, i used a cloyes double roller chain, and the noise sounds like its right in front of the gear shifter, its a 5spd. I cant figure it out, but its annoying as hell, so anymore possible suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks

Message: Possible " pinging " @ 2500 rpm ?
Possible anti-pollution mechanisms @ idle ?
Have you tried a mid premium or premium gas ?
My 95 3.9l auto will " ping " @ about 2500 rpm
in 2nd on light load ,light acc.
manually selected in heavy traffic , low speed.
Try fill up / top-up of premium..

Message: No its not pinging, its a ticking. I always use premium plus anyhwere between 5-8 gallons Turbo Blue. Its seems like the more hell i give it, it goes away, then i baby it, the sound comes back. So ive found a solution, always have her wide open :)

Message: the cam to crank dimension in the 3.9 is .050 closer then in the 5.2/5.9 engines, that gives just enough slack in the timing chain to cause the ticking you are hearing, Dodge has a tsb out telling how to add a timingchain tensioner. Also see the homepage for this site for a pictorial on how to add one.

Message: Hello I got a 95 3.9 dak that had the same problem at the same idling range. Then I started to notice a studdering at 40-50 mph like if I was low on gas. I called dude to replace the chain and the noise was gone. Parts do go bad You might want to change the chain. it worked for me.

Message: What model of truck do you have??? When I pulled my timing cover off to put in the roller chain and tensioner I found out that my 99' came stock with a tensioner... If you didn't put one in it when you changed your chain, it very well could be that problem... AND not all roller chain kits out there are the same quality as others... You should really read what hughesengines has to say about the different kits out there... Of course they are just trying to sale you their kits, but they do point out that gears on some kits after getting hot will flex enough to allow loosness to occur... Or like Larry said, if it's possibly around your valve cover area, it may very well be your injectors :// You'll never know till you pull it apart I guess...

Message: You said it sounds like it's coming from in front of the gear shifter. I just chased down a couple ticking sounds on either side of my transmission tunnel, they were both hairline fractures in the exhaust.

Message: I have been fighting the same knock. Well today I found the knock. I too replaced my lifters and pushrods just to have the same knock. About 7000 miles ago, I relocated the EVAP Silenoid from the intake manifold to the firewall. My knock was the silenoid that when the motor warms up, the silenoid opens and closed 8 to 10 times per minute. It was causing the knock that I heard so well in the cab.
Boy am I glad I finally found my problem. I relocated the sileniod back to the intake manifold.

Message: The truck is a 98 model with a cloyes double roller chain and new tensioner, but ive sense fixed the prob. The Crower roller rockers i had just needed adjustment again, and i'll while they are good quality the require constant adjustment when reving up to 5100rpm
