I've got an 88 dakota 3.9 with 175k miles on it. The brakes work fine when stopping gradually, but when stopping suddenly - eg. panic stop - they don't work well at all. It's almost impossible to lock the wheels up at speed, and there's a 1-second delay before the brakes start to kick in. I've replaced the wheel cylinders and calipers a couple of hears ago, and recently replaced the master cyl and booster, but still have the problem. I've bled them thoroughly several times.

I noticed that when I hit the brakes the rear proportioning valve moves quite a bit. I thought the valve was actuated only by changes in bed height, and am suspicious that activating the brakes causes the valve to move. Could this be sapping my braking power?

If someone else has a late-80s dakota with a proportioning valve that has good brakes, I'd appreciate it if they could have someone hit the brakes and see if their valve moves too. Don't want to replace the valve unless it's really bad.

Also looking for a source for an aftermarket valve - suspect it's a dealer-only item, but you never know...

With 175K you coul dneed brake hoses. WHen they get old they will expand during panic braking reducing the pressure that makes it to the calipers. There could be a problem with the valve but that would only affect your rear brakes, you should still be able to lock up the fronts.

Also make sure the front brake pads aren't seized in the hardware causing the caliper bracket to flex when you brake.
