want to see what you think about this:
My '93(3.9) runs great but she smokes a light smoke out of the tailpipe when I'm at idle. Its got over 160K on the engine. I have only had the truck for a few months but it looks like the previous owners didn't change the oil as much as they should have b/c there is quite a bit of sludge inside. When we did the timing chain, those old parts were caked-on black with old oil. Do you think maybe this thing is just burning off some of this sludge(engine itself doesn't seem to burn fresh oil) or maybe the o2 sensor is outta whack and causing this light smoke? Like I said, the truck runs awesome especially since I added the v8 body. One thing I did notice is when I switched to a 180 thermo, the smoke problem went away? But now after a few hundred miles its back. Gas mileage is around 19. Maybe the cat? Or should I flush the engine? Thanks for the help, You've given me alot of good advice already!

It could be worn valve guides or valves seals. Do you know how to check cylinder compression. If you need help get a friend to help. It woulb be a good to perform a "dry" compression check first and find out where each cylinder stands. All readings should be within 10 percent of each other. The next thing to do would be to perform a wet compression check. This is done by squirting a couple of sqiurts of oil from an oil can int the cylinder and recheck compression. If the compression readings come up, you most likely have worn rings. If the readings don't change on the wet check then the problem is with the valves. Just my 2 cents worth.

Valve seals need to be replaced

Some shops will do it without removing the head

crane cams makes a valve spring tool that will
work on the mag heads, if you do this be sure
the cyl your working on has the piston at tdc
so you don't lose a valve than you would need to
remove the head anyway

And don't drop any parts in motor for some it
would be eisier to remove the head
