Subject: what all maintence required now IP: Logged
Message: I've had my '98 Dakota 3.9RC since about 2001, got it with 16k miles on it, not sure what went on before I got the truck though. Since I have owned it I have been doing my scheduled 3,000-5,000 oil changes (yeah, hated to run it that far out, but I was running synthetic in there). Im right now about 47k miles. Not huge in car knowledge, but isnt about time for my other fluids to be changed (differential)?? What else should I do

Message: Grease the front end
Trans fluid and filter change get 6 Qts
Autozone filter and gasket around $10
USE ONLY Chrysler ATF +4 or Amsoil universal syn
trans fluid.
Don't listen to anyone those are the only 2 fluids
to use in these transmissions, no dextron or
El-Chepo fluids or you are asking for probs
Also what is recomended by chrysler no dextron
Rear you need to unbolt the cover to change you
can get a new gasket from dealer or if it don't
tear during removal you can use some black silicon
2 Qts needed and if limited slip a tube of lube
from chrysler needs to be added.
80w90 reg fluid or the Amsoil 75w90 will help it
run cooler and help gas mileage
And most important of all a nice hand wash and wax
so you look good crusing down the road LOL

Message: Hey Larry - maybe you can give me some ideas as to what to fix...
everyone says your the man, so any help would be awesome...
I have a 92' Kota LE, 3.9 2wd///
it just hopped over 130k, and ive had it for give or take 8k miles. I couldnt tell you what it was taken care of before, but the motor is very clean after my having it for the little i have.
it was garaged for 6 months, and the whole front end (body wise) and radiator was replaced along with a water pump and misc other things associated with a collision.
Now afterwords, i seem to be eating a hair bit of oil (i get low every 2 weeks or so) but no drips, and i dont know where its going. My exhaust has black **** that spits out, and the exhaust smells like gas along with that comes bad fuel economy.
when the tranny is cold i get a bit of slippage, but no leaks from there, i have a new output yoke. However i do have a driveline shudder - but i assume its from a lack of nuts on the studs that are welded onto the tranny/motor mount that drop through the crossmember.
what else should i do now, thats not terribly expensive and would prolong the life of the truck>
Also - do i need to worry any time soon about head or intake manifold gaskets any time soon or be in any huge hurry to change out the fluid in the rear end?
the tranny fluid and filter was changed about 2-3k miles ago, and getting ready to do oil - seafoam in the motor did wonders for making the whole thing run smoother and better, but i still have a bit of a backfire on deceleration out the exhaust.
some of it i attribute to the timing chain being loose and having the rattle (*need the tensioner and new chain) and must have skipped a tooth.
What can i do?

Message: all you need is a grease gun, the most common kind is a hand pump style. On your front end parts (ball joints and outter tie rod ends) there are little zirks that look like nipples, put the end of the gun and pump them up with grease. Be sure and not to over pump or you will burst the rubber boot. just enough until it is a little more firm

Bad mileage
New o2 sensor
Autozone made by Bosch around $60
Autolite AP5224 plugs gaped at .045
Napa cap and rotor MO26 MO28
With the stock Ign you can run the regular wires
just be sure they are not starting to crack as
this truck is older and many miles
Go to summitracing.com and get a set of MSD super
conductor wires for a 1993 5.2 V8 Dak along
with the solid brass incerts cap will transfer
more volts to the plugs and will last a life time
o2 $60
wires $60
cap&R $15
plugs $12
spend this $150 and you will have a good running
truck, if the chain jumped a tooth you would barly
be able to move, don't think that has happend
Also be sure your cat is not pluged and the EGR is
ok it will effect idle quility
Neihoff brand Checker Auto, Parts America $50 for
new matched valve and transducer
basicly a good tune up the o2 controls the air
fuel ratio and is recomended replaced at 60,000

Message: I have a good set of OE replacement wires, and some of them bosch plat 2 plugs all around, cap and rotor needs done.
Im thinking the O2 as well, but would that cause me to backfire when decelerating tho>
How do i check the cat and egr?
never dealt with those before, and i thought the cat would smell like rotten eggs if it was clogged/bad?
as for the timing chain, i may skip the chain, but buy the tensioner (to quiet the rattling down), and just re-install the chain - would that be sound mechanically?
as for my oil consumption?? wheres it going? i get low every 2 weeks or so, enough i have to add plus or minus half a quart...

Message: Larry- also, im looking into replacing my fuel injectors (i get an occaisional surging) with a set of used injectors off a newer dakota... Autozones part numbers maintain the same for all the years dakotas 1992 - 2000, would a set of 21# injectors (From a 2000) work on mine where the stockers are 19#> what kind of gains would i get from the diffrence?

On a 130K+ motor it would be insane to install a TC tensioner and NOT install a new chain. You can get a decent quality true double roller chain/gear set for around $60. Don't skimp on parts on a job that is 80% labor. (no flame, just trying to help)

Message: Ross-
The OEM chain is much more prone to stretch than a double roller, and you'll probably end up paying less for a quality aftermarket set anyway.
You'll still have to get the tensioner from Dodge - should be about 40 something bucks.
A couple of things: the 3.9 uses the same chain and gears as the 5.2 and 5.9 - so if you see one listed only for the V8s that'll be the right one - and - you may get some advice to the effect that with a good double roller chain you don't need the tensioner - ignore it.
Do a search on this forum for "timing chain tensioner" and pay particular attention to Larry's posts - a lot of good info there.

Message: Josh, Why don't you purchase a Haynes or Chiltons manual on your truck. It will give you alot of good information on your truck. Besides it makes a good reference book to have. It should have all the maintenance schedules in it, they cost between 15 and 20 dollars, and well worth the money.
