Subject: O/D not working IP: Logged
Message: For about 2 months now the overdrive had not been working on my 94 v6 automatic dakota. No one has played around with it that would have caused it to do this.
Twice before it finally stoped working it did not want to engage so I quickly switched it into neutral, than back into drive and it worked.
I took it to a local tranny shop and he said to take it to the dealer cuz it it most likely an electrical problem. I took it to the dealer and they told me it is most likely some seal or seals inside the tranny, but they would have to lift it and do some vacume tests to be shure.
Now.... has anyone experienced anything like this? Am I in for a tranny rebuild?
And not having the oberdrive is killing my gas.
Thanks

Message: On the side by the shift linkage check the
connection on the plug first
3 wires in a row
front wire Black O/D
center wire red yellow batt +
back wire yellow black band lockup
both controlled by computer, if the connection is
ok than most likly the solonoid is bad and you
need to remove the trans pan to replace it.
They do go bad

Hey, i had the exact same problem. NO OVERDRIVE. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) was shot. It is on the driverside of the transmissin with the speedo cable coming out of it. It only takes about 10 minutes to replace, but the part cost almost 70 dollars. You could possibly take it out and clean it, but more than likley, the magnetic pickup sensor inside is shot.
I would recomend geting a new VSS from aoutozone.

About the vss. If it broke, would my spedo not show anything as well? tried cleaning it and putting some dialectric greese already.
If what I was playing with is the vss it was right before the drive shaft and only had wires coming out of it.

Message: Well, you should have the speedo cable coming out of the sensor also. When you check your codes withe the key on/key off thing, what shows up? I believe mine threw a 12 or 15, on of these means No signal from VSS. If you get that, it is definatly your VSS. If not, talk to Larry.

Message: If you unplug the speed sensor the speedo will not
work and no O/D
speed sensor on 94 is in the tail shaft the O/D
and lockup plug is on the drivers side of trans
near the shift linkage above the pan not in plan
site as the speed sensor is.
This plug goes straight down into the recepticle
not from the side
