Subject: V6 Broke Down...HELP!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota V6 and it has 55000 miles on it. This truck has never been in the shop and has always run perfectly. Never had a problem whatsoever. Anyways, I was driving down the road today and I noticed the problem when it seemed as if the gears would just stay in 3rd or 4th. After a few minutes of this, the "CHECK CAGE" light came on. As I accelerated, a clackity-clack/beating noise occured and the engine eventually just shut off.

I need any advice or insights to what this problem might be. Again, this came as a total shock as I have never had a problem with my truck.

Thanks

Im assuming its a automatic. was the engine overheating? If it was what happend is the engine when into limp mode. What this does is if the engine is overheating the computer will turn off the ac compressor as well as any other accessories that are causing an engine load, as well as lock up the torque converter (if equipped with a locking converter), and shift the transmission into 3rd and wont come out of third until the engine cools down. Shifting it into thrid while putting more rpms on the engine actually reduces the load on the engine by spinning it faster. The clackaty clack might have been a spun rod bearing, piston slap, lifters, anything that can be affected by overheating, if that was your case.

Well start by "checking gages" if the Temp gage is high its overheating if its pinned cold when it should be up then its also over heating. check the Oil gage, do you have oil pressure?
If you've done this then the next and best step is to hook up a SCAN tool and start by checking codes. if there are no codes then watch the readings and look for anything that is out of the ordinary. if you don't have a SCAN tool or easy access to one then you may need to bring it to someone with one.
Thats my 2cents

Reset the computer and see if it will restart

disconect batt cable and hold key to start for 30
secs, reconect cable and try.

It sounds like presure sensor, O/D or lockup
solonoid went bad.

see what happens, if it starts get to a shop and
have them scan for trouble codes

Maybe it did say "check Gage".

Is there such a thing called check cages?

If it is indeed the Gage, is this a serious problem? I know absolutely nothing about parts or problems. I had it towed to my mechanic but will not know anything until Monday.

The light on dash says "check Gages", so it can be triggered by voltmeter, temp, oil pressure gages on the dash

The check gages light comes on when one of the gage readings falls out of normal range. Whether or not it is a serious problem depends on what it is wrong.
Good luck let us know what you find out on Monday

Thanks. I will do that. I'm glad I was able to roll off of the road when the engine shut down because a Big Mack Truck was right on my tail. lol

Well I got the news on what happened today and its not good. I blew a rod and a new engine will be required. ONLY 55000 miles on this dak and I'm having to get a new engine. I'm seriously thinking about selling my dodge after its fixed and getting something else.

sorry to hear that. that is pretty uncommon, these engines are generally very durable and reliable.

Since you have to go with a new engine, maybe you can put a V8 in it? that will make you forget your troubles

96 k miles dodge dakota 97 "check gages" light

Hello, since last Thursday 03/18/04 my "check gages" light is been coming on and off.
Probably nothing to do with it but it was real hot that day and the truck was under the sun all day. After work when i went to start it I noticed it would not start at the first crank and that's when i first saw the light.
It seems like a dead battery but will start after two or three tries.
Once started it will run no problem and all the indicators are within normal range.
No loss of oil pressure or overheating...etc
The problem is not consistent but anytime the "check gages" light comes on and stays on when i turn the ignition to the on position the truck will not start properly.
Can i get help form you guys.
Thanks
Youssou
