Subject: Rear Differential Leaking IP: Logged
Message: Now I know that there is only suppose to be a little bit of seepage from the drain plug. Now my 2000 4x4 Dak, at 42,000+ miles, has a little drip at the bottom of the seal. A drip on the ground, underneathe my seal, about he size of a dime, after my truck was parked two hours, is what I noticed. It this a "do it yourself" project or am I better off taking it in and having it done? How much will part cost me, roughly, if it is possible to do it myself?

Message: The rear end differential gasket is a do it yourself job. Just take the cover off and clean it up and the diff itself. Install the new gasket and tighten.

Message: If there is no gasket, like on the 99 and earlier 3rd gens, just use
silicone to seal the cover on.

Message: Make sure that the leak is from the cover - it could be from the pinion seal on the front side of the differential. If its the seal, the job is also not too tough.
