Will I hate myself if I buy a 3.9l V6? I'm looking at two 2002 Dakota QC's virtually the same; one is V6 & one is V8. V6 has 14K miles & new tires. V8 has 24K and needs tires. Price is the same-$16K.

it depends if you plan on alot of towing. maybe the v8 would be better, as its a heavier truck anyways. but if gas milage is your fancy than by all means go v6. it has plenty of power and will actually tow a decent amount too.

plus the v6 has 10k less miles and god tires :-)

But it will be a lil underpowered...if you like a lil pep...go with the v8...but if you don't care and want gas mileage...go with the v6 definitely something like on highway mileage is 13-14mpg vs. 16-17mpg

Why would you recommend the V6 in the QC? I have a V6 in the RC SB, and would not recommend anyone have any heavier truck with the V6. My brother has a QC with the 4.7. The 4.7 is a great motor. I would get the V8 and put new tires on it. But that is my opinion. The fuel mileage is not any different between the two, don't let anyone else tell you different.

Get the V8. I have a RC SB Gen 1, and the V6 has just about the
right amout of power, but I still want to drop in an 8. I don't
think you'd be happy with the V6 in a truck as big as yours.
Tires are easy to replace if you don't like the, the engine is
rather permanent.

The 3.9 V6 is a great motor. It has a lot of versitilty as far as towing and power. It has plenty. But, the 4.7 gets about the same gas milage. My V6 gets about 16 miles to the gallon. My friend who has a 98 Quad Cab with the 4.7 also gets about 16, so the gas milege is about the same. The 4.7 is better for towing. That is the reason that the engine was made. Dodge put all of its power in the low RPM range where you can actually use it. The V6 has to hit 3000 RPM before the torque really kicks in, but once it gets there, it is gone. If you want a fast truck, you shouldn't go with the quad cab anyway, but the 3.9 is the faster motor. Comparing the weight vs. power ratio, the V6 is faster. I raced a 4.7 and beat it by 2 seconds.

Hope it helps!

Big Dave -
I agree the 3.9 is a great motor, but hp and torque ratings for both engines are @ 4800rpm and 3200rpm, respectively, so I don't see how a 3.9 is faster than a 4.7, all other things being equal (same body, tranny, engine condition, etc.) And the difference in engine weight is certainly not enough to eat 60hp and 70lb/ft of tq.
BTW, I'm assuming you have a QC, otherwise your mpg comparison wouldn't be valid.

what ever u do, dont get the v6! that could be the biggest mistake of ur life. and to who ever said the motor makes most of its power down low ummmmm how does a sohc motor make all its power low?? thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard. and the 4.7 qc dak will get better milage over the 3.9 depending on if ur in hilly area's or not cuz if that v6 has to keep pullin the truck up hills its not going to get good gas at all. just buy the v8! or go test drive them both and then buy the v8 and ask urself why u wanted the v6
