I just bought a 1990 Dodge Dakota from a friend off my Dad which broke down 3 months after the engine was rebuilt. The guys wife was going to fill it up with gas becuase of the 9/11 deal and half way their the truck stalled. After restarted the truck and droping it into gear it tries to take off. If you give it gas and drop it in gear it will burn the tires and take off, but you can't stop unless because it will stall out. I took out the solinoids under the transmission pan and checked them out and cleaned them. they seemed to work, but i not too sure what they even do. Does anybody know where or if the truck has a lock up switch on the trasmission or if the torque converter is shot.

it sounds like the converter is shot. i don't think 90 daks had a locking converter i think that started in 97...

Thanks Man I also Pretty sure that the Torque converter is also Shot. I have read on other pages that they fill up with crap from the transmission and lock them selves up. I'm going to drop the tranny Sat and put a new Torque Converter in it Sun and hopefully it'll be good.

Ummm, hello? Lockup converters have been around since the 70's....all automatic Dakotas included. The only non-lockups were HD 727's (in the first Cummins engines, and other HD applications) and the first couple years run of A518's, as far as I know.

If its a newer trans they have a lock up and
depending on year electricly controled by comp

look on the side by the linkage for a plug and
unplug it, there are 3 wires in a row

front wire black O/D
middle wire Red yellow 12 v +
back yellow black band lockup

The comp will ground the circuit and enguage
lockup or O/D if shorted it will stay on or
the selonoid itself is shot

lockup converters do go bad but its not a common
problem on the daks

Me and a buddy was taking the trasmission out and got everthing un hooked and took out the cross member the hole nine yards, but the tranny will not come out of their. Does anybody have any tricks. The Rear of the Trasfer case hits the crossmember that the torsion bars are connected to, and it won't come out because if welded to the frame. Monday we are going to loosen up the motor mounts and move the engine forward as far as it will go so that we can take the trasfer case off then drop the tranny. Its been a real pain.

We tried to do just what u just said but the trans case would not come apart from the transmission because their is not enough room to pull it apart. The only thing i can think of is eiter move the motor forward like i siad earlier or raise the body a littl then it woul clear and pull apart. ????????????

In all the haynes repair manuals they say to get the transfer case off so the trasnmission can be droped to un bolt the rear cross-member??? Well the rear cross-member on my truck is the one with the tortions bars mounted on it and its welled to the frame. the center cross-member has already been taken out and their is still no room to pull it out. The bell houseing fall down on the crossmember like deal that has the sway bar attached to it but it also can't be taked off because its also welded. which is why I have to raise the cab to clear the real cross member to pull the tranny back far enought to drop the fron of the tranny to the ground and pull it out then. Is the tortion bar crossmember deal sopposted to be welded or did someone do this???

I finially got the tranny out I had to do what i said by lifting the cab and jaking the rear of the trasfer case to pass the crossmember. Just curious but is their a way i can tell if the torque converter is shot for sure?????
