Subject: Port an Polish the heads! IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone done this...and if so what kind of
performance am i looking at and about how
much will it cost...my father had his 340 heads
done and he said they were expensive and
took a lil more than a week to do. Will this
increase torque? Any suggestions, ideas,
andsolutions to this prob will be aprreciated.
The guy that can do this is not far from me and
i would like to do this if it helps alot! It is either
this or get a sure grip rear end.

Message: I'm currently in the process of doing this along with a few other things to my engine, but I'm doing everything myself simply for the satisfaction of getting it done right and getting the most out of it... I have heard of krcperformance doing it for some people for around $400, but I've never seen them after the job...
I will tell you this, from what I've done so far, you can expect big improvements... Let me just refer to it this way... I could barely start my thumb into the intake ports or runners up to the knuckle, after the "pinch" removal, I can now stick my whole thumb in up to the hand with room to spare, and this is still in the safe limits of the metal thickness... The exhaust side will see huge improvements... By this I mean you can take out a good 1/8" all the way around and you will be able to fully bowl match your guides on the exhaust side... You do have to leave the hump in there due to turbulance issues, but you will still see very large improvements...
It's nothing like the older cast heads where you can take out up to 1/2" all the way around, but it still helps a lot with removing a lot of the restrictions and lips and everything in around your valve areas...
I personally think that this is more than worth it... You oughta port match your intake and everything as well with maybe even upgrading your valve train if not allready done so...
Larry allready has done this to his engine and should be able to fill you in on all of your benefits from doing this...
It's my understanding that this improves hp up to 10 or 15 on some applications and torque and fuel mileage quite a bit as well...

Message: Yes it is well worth it and very noticeable in
mid and top end performance
be sure you use the thin steel .030 crush head
gaskits, using the cheaper sandwich gasket that
comes in most kits has a thicker.060 crush and
will change your comp about .2
thin gasket 9.2 to 1 comp
sandwich 9.0 to 1 compresion
match the intake, lower the devider and shorten
the ports 1 1/2 to 2"
Doing all this with a bigger TB low restriction
exh and the 1.7's will pick you up 20 to 25 hp
in the mid and top end rpm's.
Mike your 94 has the small exh manifolds either
find a set from a 92 93 V6 or go with a set of
JBA headers if you port the heads, better gains
