Subject: rebuilding engine?

Message:
I own an 89` 3.9 dak. It has really low power and smokes a lot. Not sure if its the rings or the or the vavles or what.I`d just like some advise on wether I should rebuild the engine. What I would really like to know is where or how to do a diagnostic and find out exactly whats wrong with the engine and if I`ve done any major damage to piston walls. Is it easier to rebuild an engine or put in a new one? would it cost a lot more to upgrade to a 318?

Is it blowing black or white smoke? I'm thinking white. This means you're buring oil which is cause by blow-by in the cylinders. With your truck being an '89, there is probably quite some wear in the cylinder walls. In a rebuild, this can be fixed with oversized piston rings to make up the difference in size.

As for whether to rebuild or replace...it depends on how much money you want to spend. I've found used V8's with 60K-85K miles on them for $1200-$1600. Crate motors can be almost double that. If your V6 tranny doesn't bolt up to the V8, then you have to buy a tranny, and probably a new drive shaft as well. Oh yeah, and a computer. And I don't know if the V6 accessories (alternator, power steering pump, etc.) will bolt onto a V8, and you have to move the motor mounts.

Depending on where you are, you might be able to get a complete rebuild for about $1500, and that is if you had a shop do it for you.
