Subject: Low oil pressure, warped rotors, more...

Message:
The timing of everything is about to kill me... i'm on the verge of a nervous breakdown, getting more and more in debt every day and things don't seem like they're going to be improving anytime soon.

So... I got a few problems with the dak that I'd like to start saving to fix. I'll number the questions to help anyone willing to answer keep track of em.

1.) Today driving home I noticed my wonderfully accurate oil gauge is giving me some pretty low values. After I changed my oil to Mobil 1 10w-30 about 2 months ago, my gauge would show my pressure on the 40 mark at idle and in between 40 and 100 when getting on the gas pretty hard (usually around maybe 70 or so). Today coming home from school it was at around 25-30 at idle and 40-50 at WOT. Is that a normal occurance or should I look forward to related-problems in the near future if I don't start figuring stuff out now?

2.) My front brakes are beginning to squeal more than ever. The pads aren't worn out at all and I'm figuring my rotors are warped to hell and back. I feel a nice vibration in the pedal when braking heavily after running at approx 50-60 mph. Would powerslot rotors last much longer than an oem set? How easy are they to change? Pretty simple additional step when doing a brake job or what?

3.) I'd like to change my plugs sometime soon, but when looking at the locations, I'm wondering how the heck do ya'll get to the back plugs? Standard ratchet or what? The real biznatch looks to be the back one of the driver's side. It looks like the exhaust manifold and its heat shield is really trying to block access to it.

4.) I'm also wanting to get a 180* thermostat put in. It doesn't look too difficult...maybe a lil messy with the antifreeze and all, but not too bad other than that. Larry, have you gotten the jet thermo installed? Just wondering if it's a new favorite. You mentioned testing the thermostats by submerging them in hot water before installing them... do you just start heating the water up and them totally submerge the thermo and watch for the temp it opens at or what?

5.) Cleaning the IAC - Wadak, I believe you posted a link with pics of how to do that the other day. Some 4x4 site... if you were the one that posted that, could you repost it for me? Mine is beginning to give me signs that it's getting carboned up and needs a good cleaning. Torx #25 bolts... they unscrew at the front of the tb and then the iac comes out of the back or what?

6.) My transmission is still giving me trouble occasionally...usually when my engine isn't warmed up yet (even when the temps are around 60*F...although today was very humid). Here's a recap of what it does. When I accelerate my rpm's go up...then it goes to shift, the rpm's keep going up and then it shifts. Basically my tranny is slipping...smoothly though. Just TOO smoothly.

7.) Lastly... if any of you know how to get that damn middle seat/console thing out from between my seats (reg. cab) WITHOUT cutting/breaking anything, please let me know. I took my cup holder out and I have access to 4 bolts where that was, but it'll leave the metal brackets in place I think. The big thing is, how can I get ahold of the bolts? A small ratchet isn't flat enough to fit between the bolt and the floorboard and an open ended wrench doesn't curve where it needs to and either won't fit on the bolt when it's in a position where I can turn it or doesn't have any room to turn when I get it to go on the bolt.

If I think of anything else, I'll be sure to add to this post:) I did get bodywork done on the giant dent in the driver's side (from being blasted by a girl who hit ice in the school parking lot). I still need to take it back in to have the ram head decal put on cuz it hadn't come in yet. The place that did it also helped me realize one other thing. The people who did the bodywork on the other side when I spun out and knocked a sign across the road, didn't do a very good job. They used cheap paint and didn't "rust proof" the underside of the panel and I was told I need to have that done if I plan on keeping the truck a while or it's gonna rust out. Wonderful... that's prolly another couple hundred bucks. If I had the money, I'd prolly just have them replace the entire bedside with a new piece, but just that piece is $950 plus painting, labor, etc... total cost is around $2500 if I did that. Ouch...

Okay, sorry for the extremely long-winded post...lol. I'm done now, I promise. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

in response to some of your ?s

oil pressure seem ok, mine dose nearly the same thing. Its steady slightly above the midpoint at anything above 1,000 rpms and falls to around 25-30 at idle. (my haynes book states that 6 psi is the min pressure at idle)

Brake rotors, i just replaced my rotors with powerslots and pads with hawk hps. WOW what an improvement over stock!! much less pedal travel and alot more touchy (i have to get used to them still) save up and go for it.

plugs, not hard to change if you have a universal joint attachment and various extensions. I found the middle ones to be the biggest pain because they face towards the firewall.

(wait for larry on the thermostat)

cleaning your iac full instructions here http://www.speedtweaks.ca/tipsandtricks.php

tranny, mine did the same thing. I took it to my local dealer and had the fluid and filter changed and bands adjusted, about $100 and about an hour of time (i spent looking at a nice r/t hehe)

lastly I dont know about the console, whats your idea? a speaker box? if so keep me posted I thought about that but never got around to looking into it.

hope I helped at least a little :-)

Thanks Dan... not sure about the console idea yet. I'm not a huge fan of the big stereo systems...well I am, but I don't have the money to invest in em. lol. That and being a rock/metal person, I don't need all the "bump." I'm wanting to take it out mainly to make my bucket seats look more like bucket seats and to prevent having to haul more than 1 passenger. I hate friends trying to pressure me into driving them places because I have the room. Too crowded for me... and much harder to do when you have no middle seat:) If i start getting cash though, I may have a custom box made and put a small sub in it. Something like an 8" or 10" maybe. Probably not though, but I'm keeping my options open.

I got a question
my truck hesitates in the morning when I don't let it warm up enough, what could this be?? cap and rotor or wires, its not the plugs cuz those are still new.

I've also looked at removing my center console and it doesn't look too hard. however the brackets do sit under the bucket seat brakets which means that you will have to remove both seats, which is no biggy. other then that I don't see and real dificulty to it.

I made an attempt at removing the bolts in one of the seats...they look to be difficult to reach, but other than that not too difficult, I hope. My dad would kill me if I removed my seats and he came home and saw that... so I'll have to choose a day when he won't be home all day. lol.

Oh yeah...and the oil pressure doesn't look like it's gonna be a problem after all. Was back to normal today. Maybe it was just a fluke? Ah well...at least I know it's still safe even where it was yesterday.

in response to FREAKenPYRO;
yeah ice isn't fun
powerslots were 103.99 each (for my 98 dak 2wd v6 auto)
and the hawk pads were 60.00

well worth it

josh; oil pressure is ok as long as its not at zero (check engine light) yeah your dad would likely have a cow if you had the seats out lol. my parents live down the street from me so i can tear my engine out if i want to hehe :-)

if poss. when you do get to take it out post some pictures (ps i dont know how to post pictures to the forum) if someone could tell me i would be grateful.

keep truckin

Here's how to post pics...
First you gotta have your pics uploaded to a photohost. If they're related to your vehicle(s), get an account at cardomain.com and host em there (if it's a how-to, I don't recommend it cuz that'll prolly tick em off linking to so many pictures...major bandwidth hog). Not sure of where all you can host your pics...I usually host mine on my own server.

Anyway... then you could be like:

Here's a pic of my truck:
(img src="http://URL of the pic.jpg")

And another pic
(img src="http://URL of the 2nd pic.jpg")

And another
(img src="http://URL of the 3rd pic.jpg")

etc... replace ( with <; and ) with >.

So it'd look similar to this:
< img src="URL of the pic" >
...without the spaces between the < and i and the " and >.

Get it? If you don't, I'll turn it into a pic with the code exactly as you'd need to type it. If I type it in exactly on here, the website will automatically try to make a pic show and the code won't show. Oh yeah...to get the URL of the pic if you're not very internet savvy. Usually you just gotta right click on the full size picture (not a tiny thumbnail) and the click properties and copy the Address(URL) in the properties. It'll usually be something like http://www.whatever.jpg
