Subject: Questions about the 5.9 IP: Logged
Message: I have three questions:
1) I have a 2000 Dakota SLT with a 3.9. Would it be more effective to upgrade my 3.9 as is, or drop in a 5.9 and then upgrade?
2) What kind of gas milage does a 5.9 get?
3) If you had a Dakota with a 5.2 4x4, and you put a 5.9 in there, would you still be able to use the 4x4 capability?
Thanks for all of your help!

Message: 1. You're looking at a big job swapping engines like that. Naturally, you'll have a greater max-power capability.
2. Lousy (16ish), but can be improved with smart mods.
3. Yes.

Message: If the 5.9 gets about 16 miles to the gallon, that is about what I am getting from my 3.9 V6. Do I just have a lead foot or is that about standard?

Message: Nah you don't have the lead foot...I do I usually get about 12-14 mpg when I am driving around town...I can get 17 when I am traveling back and forth from school.
If I'm not mistaken I think that for the size and weight of the truck the 3.9 underpowers it a little bit so that is why the gas mileage is only so so.

Message: That is hard to believe that a difference of 2 liters doesn't make a difference. The power boost makes up for the difference in liters. How much more power is in the 5.9? The new 5.9's have 250 horses over my 3.9's 175. 75 horses doesn't seem like that big of a difference for a that big of a gap in displacement. Is 75 horses really that big of a difference?

Message: Could it be they put bigger gears in the v-8 trucks? I don't
know, just know that I have 3.55s.

Message: You're letting the liter assignment confuse you. Taking the 175hp rating divided by the displacement, you get approx. 0.735hp/cubic inch. Taking the 360 and 250hp rating, you get 0.694hp/cubic inch. Taking into account the averages involved in standard production engines, and the slightly lower internal friction for the V6 and they're essentially dead even. Measuring hp/liter yields similar results.

Message: That makes sense. If I do a swap job for the 5.9, what kind of other modifications would I need to do to make sure that I don't experience any problems from the extra power?

Message: I don't know what is wrong with your 3.9 but mine gets 22-23 hiway and 18 around town, CC 3.55 auto. also its not so much the 175 vs. 250 but the 225 torque vs. 345 that 120 torque diff. is more then 50% more then the 3.9 gets, big diff in usable power.

Message: Beefy tranny. Not sure what rear you have, but you need at least the 8 1/4. This unit received a significant strengthening back in 1997. You may already have it. Some sort of limited slip for the rear would help. Bigger radiator too.

Message: How much would all that cost me. The new 5.9 and the beefy 8 1/4 tranny, a limited slip diff, and a bigger radiator. How much is all that? Ballpark.

Message: Sorry, didn't mean to mislead you. The 8 1/4 is the rear. The tranny would be a 46RE. Man, that's a money pit even going bare-bones. A crate 360 would be over 3 grand, or you could build your own low-buckin' it. Depending on what you built it up to, and how much work it needed, maybe $1500. Rebuilt tranny would be a thou minimum, but a well-built one can hit 3 grand. Not trying to be difficult, but you see my point? You might find a beefy 8 1/4 or a 9 1/4 for $100 at a u-pull-it yard. LSD? $300 and up. Radiator? At least $250. Looking at those numbers, it almost makes sense to strap a blower on the V6.
