It's going to be the same as the sets for the 5.2/5.9, if the V6 isn't listed specifically. I got a fine double chain, true roller set from Summit Racing...ordered through the online catalog. Best price I could find.

When you order from summit racing and others, do you still need the tensioner, or do they make aftermarket chain sets that do not need the tensioner at all? Also, anyone seen a direct drive timing set for the 3.9l?

The 3.9 takes the same timing set as the 318/360. Comp Cams has some nice sets. 2103 is the basic, 3103 is the premium set. Both are reasonable.

So, if I got a double timing chain, what exactly would it do for me? What is the difference between the basic and premium comp optons?

Thanks

Yes you can and should also install the tensioner

The roller chain has less resistance to turning
and will actualy give you about 5 hp

3.9, 5.2 and 5.9 all the same chain

Sorry to dissagree here Larry but you dont need the tensioner on any good aftermarket double roller.
If a 426 Hemi came with a double roller and no tensioner theres no way in the world a 239 has to have a tensioner with a quality double roller.

I know the local Dodge dealer's shop forman and he tells me that the tensioner is only a fix for weak (stock) and quite chain setups. He says any HP doulble roller will last as long as you need it to, stay quite enough and true.

NONE of the A-engines came with tensioners until sometime in the 90's...even the ones with the crappy plastic teeth. Go figure. Actually, it's intended to maintain accurate timing within the needs of the MPI system....with the aforementioned crappy stock set.

When the V6 blocks were machined the cam bore
was droped .050 closer to the crank for some
ungodly reason and any chain that streachs even
a little will end up rattling

Put a new chain in a V6 silent or roller and
you will see the slop they have right from the
start with no wear, there are some chains made
.050 shorter but they cost

another thing here is its more sproket wear than
chain streach

Unless we are talking about a very good quility
chain costing like $300 like the dyna gear chain
than yes

But something like the cloyes, mopar which is
manufactured by cloyes, summit chains and a few
others that are just good rollers not top of
the line they will in time develope the rattle
I have seen it happen quite a few times

The stock and silent chains will develop the
rattle starting as early aas 10,000 miles a
double roller will develope the same rattle
anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 yes it takes
longer but still occurs.

I can testify to that. I installed an Edelbrock set and test fitted it without the tensioner to see if I could leave it out - no way, too much slack.

I put a MP chain on my 94 when I joined DD.com and much abuse and N2O later I have no noise, I shortly there after put one on my 96 for work that I do no less then 1k a week and still no noise.

"V6 blocks were machined the cam bore was droped .050 closer to the crank" If thats the case why are 5.2 and 3.9 pushrods interchangable?

News to me. I just put my Summit roller on and it was so tight I could barely get it to go on.
