Subject: 1994 Dakota 3.9 stalling IP: Logged
Message: I am having a stalling/idle problem with my 3.9L. The motor runs fine untill you let off the gas to stop, it will idle rough for a second then will quit about 50% of the time. Runs at 600 - 700 rpm when it does idle. When gas pedal is pressed and let off in neutral the idle will dive to 400 or so and sometimes recover and sometimes engine will quit. I have cleaned the carb, changed the pvc valve, new plugs, nothing has helped. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks

Message: Yeah, its probably the Idle Air Controller. I had the same
problem on my '94 3.9, and when I installed a new IAC it worked
like new.

Message: my 94, started, ran, would idle at a stop line ok, IF it made it throught the idle drop. Mine would mostly stall in a parking lot when I would feather the gas to manouver around or when backing out of the garage and I dropped the tranny to drive. At this time the idle would drop as per normal but would not recover.
I took it to dodge after I had cleaned the TB and IAC and they scoped it. EGR valve was the prob and this would cause the valve to open at the wrong time thus messing up the idle.
$85 part, $300 total bill including labour. Any backyard mech can change it
The EGR is on the pass side rear of the TB next to the dist cap.
My truck had 165K km, never cleaned the TB before or the IAC(what a mess it was) original EGR and O2. Dodge sated the O2 was fine.
Hope this helps

Message: I have a 1999 dakota sport. it kept stalling on me the way everyone else's does. I took i tot my mechanics and they said it was due to alot of carbon build-up from a FAULTY carburator. It was covered under warrenty. I only have 48,000 miles on it and I've had lots of problems. Love the truck but not sure what to expect in the future....

Message: Toyman - what grade gas u running - I noticed when mine acts up it's cause I've put 92 octane in her. If I back down to the 87, she runs better and my stalling goes away!
Go fill up with 87 octane and do a computer reset. (just to make sure) - See if this helps.
** See my post on intermittent stalling, sounds like we have about the same prob!

Message: I cleaned the IAC and it still stalled.
I would replace the EGR valve. It appears to be opening too slowly. If the truck starts idles runs fine UNTIL a slight strain, such as in feathering the throttle to get around the parking lot or changing from reverse to drive.
just my two cents

Message: Hi I am having a similar stalling issue with my 1999. However it runs beautiful for about 20 minutes then it just stops running suddenly. I have noticed a no "bu5" message appear on my odometer. I have had trouble getting it restarted until I noticed that disconnecting and reconnecting my computer seems to do the trick. I told my dealer this and they put new spark plug wires on and it didn't fix the problem. I think I need a new computer or electrical harness but my dealer disagress with me. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Message: Good afternoon yall I am pretty new to the whole
fixing up SB but, I have a 1994 3.9L V6 automatic
Dodge Dakota and well from my knowledge I have 2
main problems. My neutral safety and the truck
dies on me once I give it gas and then take my
foot off it. She runs and drives, had to drive her
back home which was like an hr and some change in
the freeway. I was going to change the fuel filter
maybe that was the problem but come to find out
there isn't one on the truck and I read online and
some people said that its all in the tank with the
fuel pump. When I first got the truck the previous
owner told me that they replaced the old fuel pump
and put a new one in so I don't think the pump
could be my problem. I changed the original
throttle body out to a Ram 5.9L V8 throttle body
and it helped her out but same issue. The truck
turns on right away and it idles good, but the
second the RPMs go up when its in park and I let
go of the peddle it doesn't recover and it stalls
out. There is times when it stalls out on me when
coming to a stop and or at a complete stop. Any
ideas or what I could do?
