prorider17,
Do a Forum Search. This topic has been discussed 100's of times.
Your mileage will suk ... and gas is going to $3 gallon.
If mpg is a concern don't buy a Dakota.

To answer the question: 15mpg in town, and for me 15 on the highway. But, I tow a camper all the time on the highway, and almost never drive it on the highway when I am not towing. I occasionally get as good as 17 towing. Before I was towing all the time, my highway mileage varied from 19-21 depending on whether I had the tonneau cover on, and how fast I wanted to get somewhere, and how often I got impatient with the guy in front of me.

FUEL ECONOMY
Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge. If you fill up at a warmer part of the day one week compared to the previous week you can sometimes see a huge fluctuation in MPG just based on that. Also, the pump may have stopped pumping sooner this week compared to last, making it "seem" like you used less (or more) gallons of fuel.

I hope you find the answers you are looking for. A "Forum Search" on this site will give you lots of information regarding V6 mileage concerns.

For everyone else looking to improve their mpg:
It has been proven by Amsoil (and other leading oil manufacturers and suppliers) through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations (and as witnessed by most of our customers), that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (mpg).
VISCOSITY
Also, depending upon driving habits, conditions, and climate ... switching viscosities can improve fuel economy also. I've observed a MPG increase when switching grades ( to a 5w-30 vs. a 10w-40).
Tighter government regulations and increases in engine manufacturers’ demands are calling for more fuel efficient lubricants. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils reduce friction and drag better than petroleum oils, resulting in significant fuel economy increases.
In a recent 1.2 million mile demonstration, AMSOIL Lubricants showed a 4.5% increase in gas mileage. Other tests have shown increases of as much as 15% under certain weather and driving conditions. Yet, because every vehicle is different, as are driving habits and conditions, it is difficult to accurately project an exact increase.

Message: Thanks for the help and the advice. You see, I live in Florida. No matter what the weather is
everywhere else, it's 75 degrees here. I go easy on whatever I drive. My friend has an Expedition and gets 18mpg no matter what. I'll keep searching, but I appreciate your help very much.
thanks

I posted questions here before and have had replys from some real jerks too... too much inbreeding, ignore them

Message: This has been troubling me since I bought my 2003 2wd 5spd last May. I drive 32 miles each way to work. All freeway. I get between 16.5 to 17 MPG. I talked to the Dodge dealer he said Dodges are not famous for gas mileage and suggested I get a tonneau cover which I'm putting on tomorrow. Next will be a K&N air filter and when due, synthetic oil. Any other suggestions? The gas bill is killing me evry week but I do love the truck.

Message: i have a 98 3.9l reg cab auto tranny.
i get 22 all the time(i fill the tank full every time and check the od.)
i have a mopar bed cover
k&n filter
bosh +4 plugs
electric fan
180 t-stat
40 psi in tires
am going to switch over to synth oil and do some ignition changes next.
the bigest thing to save on the gas is how you drive,i run 100 miles a day to work,60 on 2 lane 40 hwy, when im in gas saver mode i try to keep it at 2000 rpm on take off and running (68mph=2000 rpm)
my bro has a s-10 4 cyl 5 speed and gets 26 mpg.
so to me riding in style is worth 4 mpg.
and with some more mods i should hit 24 mpg.
