I have noticed lately when I am towing (only highway driving I really do) that my Dak has a hard time downshifting out of overdrive when the cruise control is on. Also, the AC vents will switch to the defroster when this happens. What is the cause of this problem? Is it a vacuum leak maybe? What is the easiest way to find such a leak without replacing every part.

sounds like you have some vac lines on wrong
that is weird defroster actuating while in cruse

coud also be a bad checkvalve in the vac system

Larry and Swilliamson, I have noticed that on my V6 dak and also on the 1989 Dodge Caravan I had that the air coming out of the ac ducts would switch to defrost under a period of extended heavy almost wide open throttle conditions. One of the guys I work with who also has owned several Caravan's and has a Dakota has noticed the same thing when traveling out west. It seems especially noticeable at the higher altitude, on a hot summer day while running the a/c and climbing a long steep hill. I believe that the daks go to a low vacume condition and your vent controls defaults to the defroster.

Swilliamson, My v6 dak is identical to your in everything you have listed here. One thing, I would do is take it out of over-drive when towing when it begins to loose speed. The Dak is working pretty hard when running the ac and towing. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED TO GIVE YOUR DAK A FEW MODIFICATIONS.

Replace your stock air filter with a K&N filter for your stock air box, or get a cold air intake.

Consider getting a MSD system for your truck. At the very least use the autolite 3923's gapped about 5 or 10 thousands over the stock gap. Also consider install a high quality 180 degree thermostat in your truck, with the autolite 3923 and 180 thermostat, you will be much less prone to pinging and pickup a few pones doing so.

Also consider getting a low restriction muffler such as a dynomax or flowmaster installed. All of these will get you better low end performance.

Wadak and Larry: I am sure this is a problem that has developed, as opposed to something inherent. This truck used to tow my 2000 lb popup in OD with no problems, AC or not. I also forgot one thing. Since these problems have developed, the cruise will also not hold the speed. That is to say over a period of time, the speed will drop off. If I cancel the cruise, and then resume it, it goes right back to where it was set initially.

I suspect this is a vacuum problem, but I really do not know where to start. How would I diagnose a bad check valve or broken/leaking line? Is this something I need to take it to the shop for, or is this possibly a DIY job.
