Message: Do you have the tow package? If not, you had better get it installed, or you will be rebuiling that tranny in no time. My dakota tows our 2000 lb popup with little problems, but can be slugish on the hills. I have a 97 CC with the 3.9l and the auto. No tow package though. Also, without the tow package, you are limited to 4000 lbs. But, keep in mind that includes all added weight except for the 150 lb driver. Any other wieght in the truck over that 150 lbs, and you can subtract that from the tow rating. Lastly, if you don't have a weight distributing hitch, get one. It is required on any trailer with over 350 lb tongue weight. You want at least 10% of the trailer weight on the tongue(375 in your case), or expect a wild, swaying, white knuckle ride.
With all that said, the dakota is a fine tow rig when setup right, every bit as good as most half tons, and so much easier to park

Message: I got a 97 V6 dak witht he tow pakage and I towed a 3300lb car with no trouble from Newland to Asheville with no problem. For those who don't know it is down a nasty grade and back up another grade on 40.

Message: If it has a frame mounted hitch and a transmission cooler, you'll have no problems. I tow my 91 Dakota race truck(4800LBS including trailer) with my 97 CC v-6. You want to be sure to keep the OD off while towing otherwise your trans will keep changing gears and going in and out of lockup causing too much heat.

Message: If you plan on towing, definately look into a transmission cooler. They're around $40, I believe, and well worth the money. Otherwise your transmission is going to heat up and seize up. It will start slipping. Also I would tow only out of overdrive.
