Subject: 180 thermostat question-too cold?? IP: Logged
Message: I put a 180 in today that I had had for 6 months or so. It is one that is supposed to stay open if it fails. On my autoXray scanner I am getting a temp of only 176 degrees. Is that going to be to cold? or do I need to try another thermostat? I am sure the temp sending unit is OK because the old thermostat read about 195 degrees.

Message: No as long as it stays above 170 your ok
The comp will go into closed loop around 125 135
but the comp looks for at least 170 or it may trip
the mil light running to cold to long
you should be ok considering its colder out right
now
I have a Jet 180 was suposed to be hear friday
but Fedx sucks around here now they changed it
to monday
Will let you know how it works
A reg stant runs 170 175
super stant 180 185
robertshaw 180 185
Jet don't know yet
your lucky some of the cheap thermos will peak
180 open and run 165 170

Message: Thanks Larry. I am curious to see how the jet thermostat works out. I hate to have to change it again. I had a hard time scraping the old gasket off of the manifold the tech at the dealer that installed the t'stat 104,000 miles ago used way too much sealer on the gasket and it was petrified and since you have to go in vertically it is slow going. the temp here to day was 62 degrees and sunny last weekend it was snowing. come on spring!!

Message: I read an article recently from an expert on auto performance here in MN. He said to use the coldest thermostat possible for performance. Getting to think the engine is still warming up will pour more fuel through the injectors. But here in Minnesota the injectors seem to be doing that all the time with the gas mileage I get!!!

Message: I run the robertshaw 180 degree tstat and after install my gas milage plumitted to 13 around town and 17 on the highway. I installed a Jet stage II chip and on mid grade gas I get 19-20 around town and 22-24 highway.
If you just want the performance, run the 180 degree tstat, If you want the performance and good gas milage, add the Jet stage II.

Message: Yes that is 1 good thing about the Jet stage 2
chips they will improve your gas mileage
When my motor was stock I got 19 droped a jet 2 on
with no other changes and got 22
Will be waiting for parts for my stroked V6 and
am running a stock V6 with MSD, 48mm F&B, JBA's
carsound and dynomax, jet 2 and jet 180 thermo
mid range gas, ram air
Will be adding the 1.7's and a new set of lifters
and modding the intake next month when it warms
up a little
At 30 degrees the thermo is runing at 176 degrees
which is not to bad, sitting idleing in a warm
garage it hit 186 so I am going to stick with it
don't know what brand thermo was in ther but it
would go upto 185 open and drop to 162 and than
run 170 and that was with a piece of cardboard in
front of the rad so the Jet thermo is a hell of
a lot better with no cardboard
It would always give me a pending code for running
to cold but not trip the mil light after I added
the cardboard in front of rad, what a piece of
junk
I would only recomed 3 thermos
super stant
robertshaw
Jet low temp
runnig below 170 will give you the code
have not checked gas mileage on this motor yet
because it also needs a new MAP sensor reading
barometric presure 1.6 pounds low and telling
the comp the vac is only 16.5 pounds with a good
map it reads correct and 18.9 vac.
gas mileage sucks with the bad map and the bad
thermo will check after I get the new map on
Have to pic one up soon a bad map will also effect
your transmission in this case reading low the
downshift reaction time and low shift points
