Message: When Mopar dropped the 318 into the '89 V6 Dakota Sport and named it Shelby, the wiring was different in only three ways: the fan circuit, the throttle body sensor, and the fog lamps, so that makes it pretty easy. If it were a Magnum V8 block, it'd drop right in place since the pre-Magnum V6 mounted the same as all Magnums, but since yours is a '77, you'll need to visit http://www.engine-swaps.com
An electric fan is the easiest way to handle the lack of space for a regular engine-driven fan. You will need to change the oil pan. You'll need the larger TBI unit, as well as the V8 distributor for that era, or wire in a Mopar Performance distributor and control box....the instructions are very good.

Message: Magnum 318 debuted in 1992, with the 360 appearing in '93. The pre-Magnums had a true throttle body injector unit. These units had an offset bolt pattern designed to keep them from use on a conventional intake manifold unless you're handy with metal and can make an adapter. The Magnums use what is essentially an air-handling throttle assemby, which is called TBI, but the injectors aren't in the throttle body. Holley sells TBI's that bolt onto a conventional Holley pattern. This is not emissions legal, even with the optional o2 sensor feedback---stupid, but true. Mopar sells the M1 intakes, and Edelbrock will be releasing their Performer RPM Air Gap this year for Magnums. If you decide to stick with the '77 engine, use the 318 TBI and computer if OEM injection is your goal. Use the 360 Mopar TBI if you want to do some hp mod to the 318. You'll need to open the bores on the 318 intake to fit, but it's a small amount. Basically, you need to decide which way to go, then plow through. Naturally, the least expensive deal is to slap a carb on, but if emissions are an issue, can you even do the swap? If so, the mount kit is a $300 bolt-in kit for pre-Magnums. The problem with OEM TBI is that they are fairly rare, weren't used for many years, sooo they're pretty expensive. An aftermarket Holley unit would cost more, but not that much, and you'd have a much more flexible unit.

Message: You'll need an independent ignition system, meaning something like Mopar's electronic ignition kit. I took a single-point distributor ('69 318) and added a Pertronix module. Once you cut out the built-in ignition, if you have a tach, it won't work, but that's nothing an aftermarket unit won't fix. You'll need to bypass the ASD relay to keep the fuel pump, AC, and alternator working properly. Don't forget the engine mount kit. Really, that's pretty much it. Oh, and you'll probably wanna unplug that "check engine" light. It'll be on all the time since the computer will no longer have the TBI to talk to. Tranny. Is it an overdrive automatic? You'll need to run the tranny overdrive wire through a 99 cent toggle switch since the computer will no longer have the info it needs to do this job. If you have a stick or a 3-speed automatic, you're ok.
