Message: I know, there have been multiple posts related to this, but most of them only have bits and pieces, or not exactly the same thing I have.
My '98 dakota started making a quick but loud grinding noise during right turns. Sounded like it was coming from the left front. It didn't happen all the time, so I didn't get too concerned but did keep listening for it. Then I started noticing a constant grinding, a bit quiet, but constant. Couldn't tell if it was the same tire, but it was definitely on the left side. Then the grinding during the right turns got louder and more regular. The constant grinding became more noticeable, and when I apply the brakes the grinding gets loud as well. At slow speeds, like backing out of a parking spot and turning in an intersection, the front end is actually ratcheting.
I know I need to get it into the dealer, but they have a 1 week waiting list and the last time I hgad it there to replace the broken exhaust manifold bolts they kept the truck for 3 days and charged me almost $300. So, my questions are...
1) What is most likely causing this?
2) Is this something that I can get parts for myself and fix it. (I have access to a pretty well equipped shop and tools. I used to be a farm equipment mechanic)
3) What might happen if I drive it for several more weeks until I can afford to, and make arrangements for, be without the truck for several days?

Message: ball joints or brakes
pull the wheels and check the pads and also see
if while jacked up you can force the wheel from
top to bottom there should be no play if there is
the ball joints are bad

Message: I've never heard of a Ball-joint grinding, they usualy clunk if anything, also your steering will feel loose. But for the grinding yeah jack it up and spin the wheel if the wheel is tight your caliper slides are seized. If you feel play up and down it could be your Wheel bearing or a Ball-joint.
