Subject: 98 V6 Dakota Problem IP: Logged
Message: A few days ago my 98 Dakota with 3.9L V6 would not turn over. I checked the engine only to discover that a battery cable had come off the battery. I put it back on, started the vehicle, and found that it would only start if you gave it some gas and if you took your foot off the gas, it dies. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

Message: I had a similar problem with my '98 last fall. After a lot of head scratching and checking of TPS and IAC I found that my battery was slowly dying. I replaced it with an Optima red top and that solved my problem. No trouble with it since. Hope this will help you

Message: You may have reset the pcm with that cable off and the computer isn't used to it starting without you giving it gas... I'll let someone else clarify on this, but this is what I would try. Disconnect negative battery cable, hold key in start position for a little bit (15-20 secs?) which would reset the pcm again. Then I'd start it, let it idle for a minute, shut if off, restart, let it idle for a minute, shut it off, restart and drive like normal. Not sure if that's what the cause is, but if I was desperate, I'd try it and see what would happen. The worst thing that'll happen is your pcm will be reset and you'll have to let it relearn everything. If you don't have any mods, it'd prolly relearn everything pretty quickly.

Message: Oh yeah...and before the trolls jump on me. Before trying to start it, reconnect the negative battery cable:)

Message: This is normal when the battery gets disconnected for any length of time , just start it and keep your foot on the gas for ten to 15 minutes the computer will relearn enough parameters to keep it running . Had this happen to my van with the 5.2 liter V8 and it had the same exact symptoms . Just be patient once you start it , it should be ok in 10 minutes or so .

Message: Well..i had a similar experience with mine when i had the alarm installed.Being the battery was disconnected, when i tried to start it it wouldnt run. A friend of mine suggested to turn the key to the on position(not cranking)..and wait 10 seconds..this gives the sensors a chance to relearn..then started fine
just my 2 cents
