Subject: Rear End Once and For ALL!! IP: Logged
Message: Here's the deal, I have a 1990 Dakota, 2wd, 3.9v6, blown rearend.
How do I positively idenify my rear end?
It has a 10 bolt hex cover and spider gears.
I would assume that it is an 8.25, but I've read where some V6's had 7.25's and some 7.25's had 10 bolt covers. There is no sticker in the glove compartment or under the hood. The tags on the Differential said 35 and 1150. So, how do I know for sure what I have? Can I measure the ring gear? If so, do I measure inside or outside diameter? Should it be 7.25 or 8.25 exactly? Like I said, I would assume it is an 8.25, but the way this thing dissentigrated, maybe it's a 7.25. There are several gears missing from both the ring and pinion gears and the spider gear cage is broken open. Any help would be appreciated. I wanted to just swap rear ends, but I can't find any 8.25 or 8.75's, so if it is an 8.25, I can simply buy some new gears. Please help!
Thanks,
Kris

Message: If the cover is round, it's an 8 1/4. If it's a hex shape, it's a 7 1/4.
