 Subject: Short throw shifter

I have a 93' Dakota with a 3.9 and a 5 speed.
I want a short throw shifter and I cant find one to fit my truck. The only one I have found for a Dakota period is from hurst and is for 94' up Dakotas with the 5.2. Will this work somehow?
If not is there something I can do to improve my stock one. In 1,2,and reverse are hard to get into I have to kinda slam it into them to get it in. I have driven different makes and they are smooth and just slide right into gear. Is something bent or wrecked?
