Subject: 180 Thermo Help?! IP: Logged
Message: Hey Larry,
Quick question. I have a Gen 2 Dak. To get to my thermostat do I need to A) Take off the Serpetine and the Alternator off completely? B) Take off the Serptine, then move the alternator by losing a bolt?
Thanks again Larry

Message: Hey Tank...i wouldnt worry about putting that on yet or until the summer rolls around....besides if you do most of your own work just wait to till summer or when your water pump goes out cause its a pain just to put that thermo in and the power is not worth the pain...trust me youll notice a better difference in the summer so wait for an occassion to do that but ask larry hell know!

Message: Heres how I do them, 15 to 20 min but I have done
so many, practice makes perfict they say
12mm 6 point socket and a long extension will
reach down and completely loosen the 2 bolts.
Remove the bolt from the strap that goes to the
manifold on the left and move it over to the left
now tie the 1 heater hose back out of the way
and you can remove the thermo housing
Carefully lift the housing up as you are coming up
you will need to tilt it down in the front grab
the bolts and tilting it and turning a little it
will lift out past all the obstacles.
Now just reach down and remove the thermostat
put the new one in, if you don't have the gasket
that has the paper you peal off to stick on just
use a few small dabs of silicon to hold it in
place.
wipe dry with a paper towel first you don't need to
put silicone over the hole gasket just enough to
hold it in place
be sure the spring end is in the manifold down
Now tilt and get the housing back down do the back
hole first take a piece of paper and fold it and
jam the bolt into the socket so it will not fall
out. with the socket and extension start the back
bolt but do not tighten, now do the front bolt
the same way.
no need to remove the hose or clamps from either
end.
a drop light and look down and line the first hole
than just go down with extension with bolt jamed
in the socket and get started
Once you have them both started snug them both
evenly than tighten each one down
They are somewhat of a pain but no need to remove
all that stuff to change them
Now just fill the rad but stay about an inch below
the bottom of the cap, start and let idle untill
the new thermo opens you will see it flowing and
the top hose will get hot when it opens, now just
top it off put the cap on and go for a ride.
After it cools down remove the cap and be sure its
full, and check the overflow bottle. your all set
next time you drive it will expand and raise the
level in the bottle and when it cools it will draw
in and the level will be lower, there is a hot
and cold fill line on the recovery bottle
