Subject: Hey guys I really need some help IP: Logged
Message: I have looked all over but haven't found the answer I am looking for. Today my 94 3.9 V6 died on me as I was exiting of the interstate.. thank God for that. At first I thought I had ran out of gas so I ran to a nearby gas station and put 4 gallons in my tank, Dakota wouldn't start. I now need to get it home so I can take a look at it. Now for the question:
How far can I tow my Dakota without damaging the tranny? Its rear-wheel drive with an auto-tranny, from what I understand towing an auto-tranny isn't good for the tranny. On a side note, any ideas what's wrong with my truck, I was thinking the fuelpump.
Thanks
Ben

does it crank?? if so squirt a little fuel in the TB to see if it tries to fire that would be the fuel pump then

Message: As far as the no start you will need to get it home and see what your missing (spark, fuel, compression, injector pulse, etc). As far as towing the thing with the wheels on the ground goes, if its more than a few miles i would take the driveshaft out (remember to mark the shaft so you can put it back the same way). Most good tow truck drivers without a flatbed will do this, although i do see people towing there cars behind motor homes??

Message: check the fuel presure 45 to 50 pounds
If you look on the fuel rail you will see a cover
over the valve, remove the cap and just depress
the valve its the same thing a tire valve stem
has and see if fuel comes out during the no start
condition
Also check the spark you may have the bad
connection in the wire harness but check the fuel
first.

Message: Well I ended up getting her towed, I hate having to spend money on stuff like that but 30miles to tow it home through curvey county roads by myself was a bit much. Now its on to the next problem.
Thanks for all your help

Message: Ben, going through very similar problems with my '94 Dak now, but think I'm very close to a solution. How many miles do you have on your truck?
Larry's (J&J Auto) recommendations are spot-on... he's a (well-deserved) respected expert extraordinaire on these forums.
Could be a bad fuel pump, especially if the problem occurs at low fuel levels or on a relatively high-mileage truck. Do the troubleshooting Larry recommended. This is what I think is the problem with my own truck.
Also worth checking is a known-problem electrical connection:
