Message: I've got a 2002 dodge dakota with a 3.9. I change the oil consistently but always when it's about time i get what sounds like a valve tap and i just changed it today in the garage the motor sounded beautiful, i ran a quart of lucas stabilizer and penzoil 10-30 i got home and there's a tap. i was looking through other messeges people mentioned an exhaust leak sounding like a tap. i don't know. it's still under warranty is there something i can do. just change the oil and stop messing with additives? oh yeah i got 39000 on the clock 5 speed and i don't know what else would help

Message: My '96 Ram w/ 3.9 has the same sound. I bought it used and ever since I have owned it, it has made that sound. I am curious, too, as to what it is. Sometimes it is a lot more noticable than others, but there doesn't really seem to be a rhyme or reason to it.

Message: You will be fine
Just don't use the cheap fram oil filters they
leak down and will cause tappet noise on cold
starts
start your truck and like you are going to look
under the front bumper you will hear the tapping
its the timming chain and will start to make the
noise as soon as 10,000 miles do to the fact that
when the V6 blocks were machined the cam sits
.050 lower than the 318 V8 but uses the same chain
The only way to solve this well known and
documented noise is to add the timming chain
tensioner that mopar makes to solve the prob.
go to the home page http://www.dodgedakota.net
under the how to's you will see timming chain and
tensioner
