Subject: Elec. Fan, 3922's, No overheating? IP: Logged
Message: First off, I like the benefits of an electric fan. But I've read on here that most Dak's have a problem overheating during the summer especially with the A/C on. I don't want to sacrifice the longevity of my engine.
Would changing to the 2 ranges colder plug, Autolite 3922's, solve the problem of overheating? (Knocking off an extra 70-100 degree's if I'm not mistaken in the cylinders) It's a Yankee's summer here in Texas and I'd like to know before Summer gets here. I could always find out myself, but i'm lazy and I haven't eaten dinner yet. Would you still gap the plugs between .050" and .055" with a MSD 6A, Blaster SS, 8.5's (base is .040")? Also, would you still be able to pass an emissions test? Gotstabe legal!!!
I'll more than likely get a black magic unless someone can tell me better. Is it recommended to rig the old fan shroud to fit around the Black Magic? Or leave it off?
Completely different question. If you wanted to really cool the engine and get COLD A/C during the Summer, there'd be no problems leaving the stock fan AND having the Black Magic, or a Permaflow(?) (since it doesn't have to work as hard, cheaper than B.M.) put in???? Would you still need the shroud?

Message: The biggest baddest electric fan you can find will help (i would get rid of the clutch fan). The plugs won't help. You can try a coolant addative like water wetter to drop the temp about 15 degrees.

Message: What year truck are we talking about? I just put a 150 fan on my 99, you won't have room to rig the fan to the old shroud. Maybe on some other year you could. But you are supposed to take off the shroud. The fan has a thick rubber ring around it to seal up against your radiator and its own shorter shroud.

Message: 3922's may be to cold but you can try them and yes
with the MSD system gap them at .060 and you will
get the gains from the better stronger ignition
system
1 range colder will drop cyl temps by about 170
degrees.
This will not make the operating temp change
hardly at all
If you live where it gets real hot go 2400 to
2800 cfm
I am running a 2000 cfm fan mounted right in the
shroud and it works great just be sure you use
a good control like the flexolite adjustible
thermo switch.
There are other fans besides the BM150 that will
fit in the shroud
Haden
permacool makes a nice 2800 cfm fan that also
works great
there are a lot of fans out there just be sure its
rated high enough

Message: 1 other thing on elc fans be sure you are pulling
air in through the grill and radiator and not
pushing the hot air off the motor back out through
the rad.
Almost all fans you can switch the direction on by
just reversing the + and - wires but on some you
also need to flip the fan over and change the
polarity on the wires both.
