Subject: pcv valve ???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have just finished putting my 3.9 motor back in, when I had the new motor ready to go, I did the following mods(v8 tb, crank sensor advance, elecric fan, 3923's, 180 thermostat, k+n intake, tommorow dynomax and new o2 sensor) My question is about the pcv valve which is new. When it is at idle the intake hose connected the pcv valve sucks so hard you can here it, you can hear the valve making a noise like you are shaking it . If i disconnect the hose idle goes way up the air the the hose sucks is like a vacumm. Is the valve bad?? when I had the Intake manifold off I replaced all the gaskets and everything went smooth. Any help would be great thanks.

Make sure it is the correct valve for your truck. There all specially designed for each engine. I think to test the valve you can hook a vacuum gauge up to manifold vacuum. With the pcv valve out of the valve cover, but connected to the pcv hose put you thumb over the end of the valve, when you do that the manifold vacuum at idle should go up about 1", then it should go back down when you take your thumb off. I think thats how it goes, i haven't had to actually test one in years.

Yes a lot of the PCV valves will do that at idle
nothing to worrie about

Once they get a little build up on them they quite
down.

Just the cheap stuff they build these days, mine
does the same thing as many customer trucks also
do with new valves

hey Eric I guess I am Eric II here, I just started looking at this site when my motor went bad a couple weeks ago and the information is great and has revamped my truck, im loving it!! People like larry seem to be very helpful.

Yes I did get one from autozone, I went for a long ride this am and it is still making very loud noise, Larry said it will go away, we will see. Thanks for all support.

The PCV valve is located on the drivers side just behind the engine oil cap. You will see a hose coming out from it. I just replaced mine last week and it sounds loud, I guess that is normal when new. I have a 2000 3.9 V6 Dakota

On my 95 the breather is behind the oil filler cap on the drivers side and the pcv is on the passengers side.

Exactly, as it is with the 92 and probably all of them.

The PCV valve that was in my truck when I bought it came apart when I tried to pull it out. Cheap $hit these days.

I had to order the PCV value grommet from a dealer. I did get a new breather grommet from advance.

I change both, both were so hard they felt like plastic. I also changed the hoses. Since doing so, my truck idles smoother.

due you must be on crack as the 3.9 has the pcv valve on the passenger side only the 4.7 has it on the drivers side as you claim. THIS IS A V-6 FORUM

I think that both of you are right. The PCV Valve is on the pasangers side on the "older" models, and on the drivers on the "newer" engines. My 98 3.9 is on the pasangers side and our 00 Durango with 5.9 is on the drivers. Yea I know a V8 and V6 but basically the same designs and so on. I know that the 3.9 and 5.2 are the same less 2 cylinders.

Installed Fram PCV valve in 03 Dakota 3.9. It was very noisy with a loud clacking/rattle noise. Replaced with a second Fram PCV and same issue. Orderd a Mopar PCV and will see if that helps.

I suggest not wasting your time and money on Fram!

My old PCV had no noise, but was due to be replaced due to age and high miles.

Just pulled the other "new" Fram PCV, it broke apart during removal. Installed a new MOPAR PCV and it is all good now! Very quiet and no more issues.
