Subject: Dak vs Ram IP: Logged
Message: Yo guys,
A friend of mine has a 96 ram 1500 with a 3.9 in it, and asked me if I knew if there were any differences between it and out dak's 3.9. I told him I didn't think so, but thought I would check with the experts, lol.

Message: The engine in my 2001 Ram 1500 (3.9)is cast in Mexico. I'm pretty sure the Dakota 3.9 is cast in USA. The block says "Hecho en Mexico" just above the oil filter. Looked at the same year Dakota and this isn't there.

Message: I've also got a 2001 3.9 in a Dakota an mine is stamped to the right of the oil filter that Hector made this one in Mexico. On a funny side note while trying to force the marriage made in h#// they stamped DCC on one of the oil pan rails (where the gasket goes) and CCD on the other, go figure. I am almost certain that there is nothing different on the basic long block, maybe differences in some of the bolt on things. Commonality in parts saves money. I don't know what year they started manufacturing the engines in Mexico, my 92 lacks this stamping. I remember reading that in 1997 the frame assembly was going to be manufactured in Mexico.

Message: The motor in the ram and the dak are the same
But here is a little tidbit that is not very well
known that I got from a chrsler tech on the phone
1 day.
The computers for the V6 ram actualy have a better
timming curve than there brother the dak to offset
the power to weight ratio with the heavier ram
full size truck
check the #s and you will see they are differant
and acording to the tech they run about 3 degrees
more timming.
A performance PCM runs about 6 degrees advance
over a stock PCM and also has better fuel maps
The same resault you would get by doing the crank
sensor mod

Message: So Larry,
Do you know of any neat tricks you can do with the Ram 3.9 that don't work with the dak 3.9 because of the diffferent PCM?

Message: All the mods mentioned on this board will react
exactly the same as they do on the Dak or Ram
Do the crank sensor mod and grab 3 to 4 degrees
more advance on the timming and you will notice
better low end and gas mileage without doing
anything else to the motor it helps across the
entire rpm range but is most noticeable on the
low end.

Than drop a set of Autolite AP3923 plat tip plugs
gaped at .045 and you will really notice the gains

Message: I read over that post, seems pretty easy, but I have one question:
When you reinstall the sensor after opening up the bolt holes, do you put the rubber grommet back in or not? Sounds like no, but then what kind of impact does this have for contamination?

Message: O.K. lets try this on the correct string, here is a question, if I am reading this correctly, I can take a PCM out of a Ram and put into my Dakota. This will produce better gas milage and performance without additional modifications? If so do you folks know what model of PCM this will work for and if a 2000 dak will be compatable. Thanks

Message: So, If I wanted to increase my towing performance, the crank sensor mod would be a great thing to do? Is there any way to have your computer downgraded to the original PCM and get rid of the newest "update"? Also, if I were to upgrade the plugs to the Autolite AP3923, should I also upgrade the wires to 8mm, replace the cap and rotor, and get a new coil?
