it might just be the octane then, do you still have a cat converter? if not then its likely the octane.

Carbon burning will give off a sweet smell

The lower restriction exh may just be burning off
the carbon deposites you had from the more
restricted exh

A lean running motor will also have a sweet smell
rich you would smell gas.

I bet your gas mileage is better with the free
flowing exh

what year is the truck and what mods do you have
done to it running 93 oct fuel

I run 93 octane since I first purchased my truck and it cost only 98 cents for the 93.

I found also if I use anything under 91 it pings more then a ping-pong table.

What's the effects of running rich or lean? What damage if any will it cause? Is there a difference in performance between lean and rich?

I'm having to get a new or remachined head because it ran lean and overheated on one blasted cylinder due to what I and a few others have diagnosed as a bad or partially clogged injector... If too rich it'll cause the non oiled rings to break or wear the glaze off the cylinder walls "i.e. new rings, possibly pistons, and cylinder honing...

Too rich bad, Too lean also bad... Engines depend too much on lean and rich don't they...

I'll tell you what the problem may be. It happened to me, and three of my buddies, all with dodge trucks. On these engines, right in front of the intake is the hose for coolant going into the engine. The pipe and gasket on the bottom of the hose are notorious for leaking, which would go down onto the engine and burn, giving the sweet smell. But that may not be what it is. Just trying to help!!

yeah i can vouch for that, my thermostat housing leaks a little bit. (just enough to smell) i havent lost any coolant in 6 months so its no big deal, just looks nasty by the housing. and it dosent drip anything at all on the ground.
this summer i'm thinking about pulling the housing off again and putting a double gasket on it :-)
