How much horsepower does the 3.9 have? Also how much hp does a 1993 3.9 have?
What kinds of bolt on performance parts do they make for the '89 engine to boost up the hp so it is comparable to the '93 hp rating? Ive serched around alot! and haven't been able to find anyhting.

the 93 gets its hp from the heads and the cam has
alittle more lift 432 int, ext.at the valves

the 89 cam 373 int,400 ext. at the valves,

the 93s have a 1.6 and the 89 has a 1.5 rocker ratio.

you can put a 1.6 roller rockers on,harland sharpe
makes them around $350 plus push rods

better ignition jacobs,msd etc

electric fan

cam hughes engines.co,KRC performance etc

head work bigger valves, open up the ports, mill the heads 10-20 thousands will up the compression
a few points,20 thousands will get you close to 9.5to1

if you do the heads go with some headers

basicly whatever you can do to the old LA 318s
youi can do to these motors

I've often wondered about all the differences between the pre-
mag and the magnum engines. As far as I know it is only the
heads. If that is true, can you put magnum heads from a newer
engine onto a pre-mag engine? Are there other differences?

I was told magnum heads won't bolt on our engines.

Actually the engine blocks are the same (so im told). Also, the heads do bolt up, but you need the intake, the fuel system, and computer plus lots more work. Im trying to find out how to do it.
But, this post is for easy bolt on performance. Does anybody know of any?

Alex, Let us know what all you find out. Larry could probably list everything needed.

I was told the same about the block, but that just about everything else is different and it made more since to just drop another motor in.

By the way Alex, my maiden name is Reed. Where you from?

the heads bolt on

you,ll need to have them [mag heads] drilled and tapped for the pre-mag intake to bolt on[hughes engines.com]does this

valve covers and the push rods from the mag motor
and the rocker assembly[mag ball and socket, premag
shaft]mag oil thru the push rods, pre mag thru heads

this will give you about 30-40hp

Yes, 92 and 93 Magnums have 180 while the 94+ have 175. Not sure why but I learned that when I worked for the dealer.

I know the 92-93 318s have bigger exhause manifolds, so they
have more power. It may be the same for the 3.9L.

The 3.9 and 5.2 share cam profiles, so when the 5.2's got less aggressive profiles (same lift) later in '93, the 3.9 did too...as well as the aforementioned exhaust manifolds. The Magnum heads will swap over (as mentioned, use the Magnum rockers). Use a Magnum intake. (Why would anyone use the pre-Magnum wheezer stock intake?) MP sells the appropriate length hollow pushrods intended for this swap. Make sure the lifters are oilers (I'm thinkin' they are). You can swap the water pump/timing cover but just remember the Magnum fan and water pump turn opposite of pre-Magnums, so it's either V-belt or Serpentine, with the matching parts. Since the Magnum rockers are 1.6:1, you'll automatically get a modest increase in gross cam specs over the 1.52:1 pre-Magnums. If you're gonna use the Magnum ignition system, you'll need to notch the tranny bellhousing for the crank sensor.
