Hello Ryan it sounds like you need to change the air filter. try that and let me know. I have an 87 to and it runs like brand new with no problems.

Ryan, How about checking your O2 sensor, you indicated it is choking out, as in running to rich? If it is there is a good chance that the O2 sensor is causing you vehicle to run rich. The O2 sensor is located in the exhaust before the cat. Disconnect the O2 sensor, start it up and see if it idles any smoother, if it does take it for a short test drive to see if drive-ability improves, if it does, then you have found the cause of your problem. Just remember that the O2 sensors on Gen1 and Gen2 daks should be replaced around 60,000 miles. These sensors are electro-mechanical devices that do a good job for their intended use when working properly. They will break down after time due to the extreme heat they operate in.

It could also be a bad throttle positioning sensor. If you step on the gas and it does not send a signal to the computer that the throttle plates have moved, then the engine will stumble.

Also you could have a plugged catalytic converter. The exhaust need to get out of the engine for it to run right. If it is only partly plugged, it will idle fine and run fine up to the point the exhaust can't get out fast enough.

Have the sensors checked by a mechanic with a scanner. Good Luck.
