Will a 2000 quad cab have enough power if it has the V6 engine rather than a V8? Which engine would get the better gas mileage? Is one more reliable than the other? Thanks for your input.

Obviouly the V8 will out power the V6 and the V6 will get better gas milage than the V8. I worked at a Dodge dealer a while ago and the V6 quad cab has enough power for daily use, but if you will be hauling alot or to a V8

A V6 should have enough power but if you really want a kick a V8 is better. When it comes to being reliable both engines are excellent. Both engines are gas killers but if you want a little bit more Mpg get the V6!

Yes 03SXT the 3.9 is pretty much the 318 just with two missing cylindars. There both durable engines by all means!!

I have checked out many 6 n 8 cyclinder
dakotas froma ll years and models...the only
difference in mpg is a mere 1 pojnt in the new
trucks (3.9 compared to 4.7)...the 6 gets 16
mpg while the 8 gets rougly 15 or 14...not
much of a differnce...but compared at 175h.p
for a 6 and 240 hp in the 8...i'd go 8 all the way

If there are alot of hills where you intend on driving this thing, i would think the 8 would be the way to go. I've heard from other people that the 6 sucks the gas like no other when loaded or goin up the hills. I know my 6 wont climb a hill real fast if i dont get a good run at it, and trying to accelerate uphill....forget it.

Enough power for what?? I have an 03 Quad Cab with the 3.9 V6. Power? You bet!! It'll go from 0 to breaking the law faster than anyone needs to. This last weekend we took a trip from Phx. to Flag. (AZ) about 6000' climb. Drove 85-90 most all the way. Now if you're pulling trailers or hauling loads I'd think about the V8. As for the mileage I'm only getting 15.1 including the Flagstaff trip.

In my 5.2 V8 I'm only averaging 14.9 Mpg. That's mostly highway, somewhat hilly with no loads. Also, I am a little heavy on the gas.....Just some things to consider.

My friend recently bought a used Ford F250 4wd Super Duty 4 door with V10 Auto trans. He asked me to take my 03 Quad cab out to an abandoned airstrip for a friendly drag race. I had no clue as to how these 2 trucks would compare head to head. My truck has the 3.9 six with auto transmission and 3.55 rearend, no mods. I also have the tire/suspension upgrade. I beat him in all three heats. The first one I took him by 2 truck lengths and I was running about 75 before I had to back off for the end of the runway. Other 2 heats I had him by a little less than that. Have no idea how long the runway is. It's just a small private runway that was blacktopped. We didn't check our odometers. If I read the specs correctly, he's got about 2,000 lbs. more weight than my Dakota. Probably not a fair matchup but I really didn't expect to beat him.

if you get a Q/C V6 get the 5 spd man. i have an '00 w/ no real mods(turbo muffker, IAT relocate) and moves pretty good, hauls what i want. believe me it's no speed demon but, i didn't buy my truck to race. i can start from a dead stop in second gear alomost as easy as first.

now if i could have found a V8 i probably would have gotten that. but i am very happy with the 6'er.

O.K. here is a question, if I am reading this correctly, I can take a PCM out of a Ram and put into my Dakota. This will produce better gas milage and performance without additional modifications? If so do you folks know what model of PCM this will work for and if a 2000 dak will be compatable. Thanks

I have seen V8s get better mileage than the V6 many times and vice-versa.

The part about the Ram ECU in a Dak is for the V6-the Ram ECU is programmed a bit different for the Ram's added weight.

If you are talking about the 3.9 vs. the 5.2, yes, they are the same basic engine-as is the original V10.

The 5.9 is basically the same, too, as is the old 273.

believe it or not, the old 318 "poly" engine has the same bore, stroke and cylinder spacing. The exterior dimensions and the heads were different.

Either one will get pretty bad MPG. Go with the V8. You'll lose 2-4 mpg(from my experience), but you'll gain ALOT more power.
