Subject: Replace half-shaft? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 93 4x4 Dakota with a 3.9 auto.
I've been hearing some noise in the front right of the vehicle at slow speeds and when it is cold, and found that the outer CV joint boot has a leak and is spray grease all over my wheel well.
How difficult is it to replace that half shaft? It looks like I just need to remove the lock nut, and the hub nut, jack it up and then remove the flange bolts where the shaft connects to the differential.
Is that all there is to it?
Thanks

Message: I have the same truck, so here's what you'll have to do:
(1) With the wheel off, remove the brake caliper.
(2) Remove the brake rotor.
(3) Assuming you've already loosened the hub nut and soaked it down with your favorite penetration oil (PB Blaster), loosen and remove the bolts which fasten the hub and bearing assembly to the spindle.
(4) Remove the hub nut, and slide the H&B assembly off the halfshaft. Inspect this assembly, and if it's suspect now is the time to get new ones.
(4) While you've got things apart, how are your lower ball joints? Now's the time to change them if the play exceeds limits, or if you've got a jillion miles on them.
(5) Now you can remove the bolts which hold the halfshaft to the flange, and feed it to the junkman!
