Subject: Timing Chain IP: Logged
Message: Hi Guys,
I have a quick question about timing chains. I know where,I can get a good deal on a Comp Cam timing chain.Part# 2103 I did a quick check at Comp Cams web site and according to there site. This part is good for Chrysler V8 273-360/ 1956-88. I know, that I can use a 318 (5.2L) chain. But,my Dakota is a 92.Will there be any problem with me using this chain?

Message: No but in the V6 you should also install the
tensioner or it will develope the same rattle
in time.
When they machined the V6 blocks the cam was
actualy .050 lower than the V8's and that is why
they have the chain rattle prob, closer to crank
giving you lots of slop even with a new chain
Go to the home page and
how to's chain and tensioner
http://www.dodgedakota.net/
You will find the part # there

Message: Yes you can install gears with a little modding
to the front of the motor

Message: you would also have to change the spocket hole position in the bracket for the gears as the difference between the V8 and V6 is indeed .050 which would cause way to much interference between the 8 kit which is availabe and the 6 block. See my poor attempt at a diagram below.
cam gear 0
idler sprockets 0 0
cranckshaft sprocket 0
if the space between the top and bottom sprockets is closer by .050 then the idlers must be moved outward a small amount, maybe .025 or so on each side to allow the gears to mesh properly if you were to use the V8 kit I have seen.
Also the cam would need to be a "reverse rotation cam" as the idlers in the gear drive cause the cam to rotate backwards from normal.
As Larry said it can be done, but these two things must be delt with the first to allow it to happen and the second to keep the valve timing correct.

idler gears---------0-0
cranckshaft gear-0
how the diagram should have looked!
