Subject: Ignition Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I am getting ready to purchase an MSD 6A Unit with the 8.5 MSD Plug Wires. I purchased the Blaster 2 Coil, Napa Cap and Rotor today cuz they were in stock. My question is should I install the ignition upgrades on my 97 3.9. The only other mods I have are the 180 T-stat, drop-in K&N, and I'm ashamed to say, a TB Spacer. I have read alot on past posts and only saw this topic covered by one guy, and the reasoning he was against it did not help me make a definite decision. So will this mod benefit me, or should I wait for other mods before upgrading?

I just bought all the same stuff you just got and installed it so I
say go for it. The spacer is junk though. Simply put we inject
our fuel directly into the combustion chamber, it's not metered
through the throttle body like say a Camaro is. So adding a
spacer doesn't help it probably actually hurts because I would
think you are effectively lengthening the runners which is our
problem with these beer keg manifolds. JMHO.

Why not install it now if you got it all..
After you get it installed..you can open your plug gap up..MSD recommends to open up at .oo5 intervals till you get a good TAN plug..

Bigger gap=bigger Flame front=better burn..

Did you have any other mods prior to the ignition? Exhaust, intake, ... anything?

Tazzy, will this help me? Some guy said that the ignition should be the last thing on the list of mods for my truck to take full advantage of the upgrade. Any truth to his statement. I have some extra cash and bought the ignition stuff because I could. I will wait to put them on if need be.

As far as the ignition turning your DAK into a street rod,No...
But all the Mods tend to build on the other..

So if ya got the MSD set-up..Might as well take the time and install it..

I have no numbers as far as the gains with the ignition..

But you will have more power at the plugs..allowing for a bigger gap..

your going to need an adapter if you bought the blaster 2. The easist thing to do it to sell that blaster 2 on ebay and get a blaster ss.

I have dealt with all three coils and prefer the blaster ss because of its size. once you have all that installed, make sure to have a tach adapter, because if you dont, then the pcm will never fully learn the mod ("larry") because it will keep loggin a trouble code and then the pcm will just go back to an old program it used before the mod. I have a scanner and definitly can tell a differnce from when the truck throws the code and when it doesn't.

Also, larry recomended to me to get autolite platniums 3923 and gap then at .60 with the msd setup. I followed his advice and defintly felt more increase in power over just using the regualr 3923's at .50 gap.

I also think you need to reset the pcm once installed to. Atleast this is what i did when i installed the msd setup.

Hmm I didn't need an adapter on my 99. I have a scanner and no codes are coming up. If you follow the MSD instructions you will reset the PCM when you disconnect the battery. You can turn the ignition key while this is disconnected, but considering it will take a while to install the system I would think you'd be fine without cranking the key.

There is a cut off year where the tach adapter is
not needed 92 to 95 OBD1 not needed

96 OBD2 not needed but somewere between 97 and00
they made some changes that made the adapter
nessisary

Yes AP3923 at .060 seams to be a sweet way to go
with the MSD 6a and the MSD coil, it makes a very
noticeable improvement in performance

Larry,
How difficult is the tach adapter to hook up? I haven't looked at anything on it yet, but I figured I'd ask you.

jcham, I have a 97 dak 3.9 extra-cab with auto. I have the complete MSD system installed on my truck. The MSD made a big difference, if you used the 3923's gap at .045 and .060 on the AP3923's. If you have all the stuff, don't be afraid to install it. If you need any help there are plenty of people here who will provide help. Think of this board as sort of an on line tech support for 3.9 daks. Larry, Tazzy, Dodgeboy and others have been a big a big help to others installing mods on their trucks. Good Luck on the install.
