Could be lot's of things.
First do you have a code for a rich mixture?
If not, most likely you have a bad O2 that is telling the system it is correct when it's rich.
(the O2 reads lean so the computer richens the mixture to get it to read correct)
If you have a code for being to rich, then it could be a bad injector.
It could be a poor spark not buring the fuel completely.
Do some investigating and let us know what you find.

have an older truck with a carb that is all messed up too, but he was negligent in mentioning the year so it makes it really hard to help him.

get a Haynes or Chiltos manual and learn how to test you upstream O2 or have a shop scan it. It can be malfunctioning and not throw a code.

There are 3 sensors that can make it run rich
Upstream
o2 in closed loop changes from .1 to 1 volt constantly
IAT incoming air temp around 150 160 degrees
Engine temp sensor within 10 degrees of thermo
195 stock, unless you went to a 180

I've gone to AutoZone..and All they know how to do.(at this one) is read codes..
Does the AutoZone near you read more than codes???

went to my autozone, they said they dont check codes any more in california due to some problem with mechanics or dealers or someone who sued for lost revenue.

guys get that auto x ray scanner it's great! save yourself a fortune and do your own work when codes come up, get an FSM too
