Subject: rack and pinion work IP: Logged
Message: I understand from Dodge that the rack is not user serviceable. Has anyone had a shop change out their inner tie rod ends? I'm wondering if this can be done or if you just chuck out the rack and get a new one.

Message: So has anyone changed the inner tie rods of a 2000 and later Dak, rack and pinion steering? I read a post saying that a special tool was needed to get the inner tie rods out and back in again.

Message: I'd like to know exactly what's involved too. I'm looking for a
more detailed answer. I realize the parts are out there for the
inners, but can they really be swapped out by someone other
than the dealer, preferably.

Message: Most inner tie -rods are easy to change..Well I did it for a living for 6 years..
Remove bellows.(the rubber boot)
Bent locking tang away from Tie rod end..
A couple types of connections.2 sizes of 6 sided Nut type fitting..(can rent the socket for it)
Or 2 sizes of 2 flats..1 3/16 or 1 5 /16 I think thats it..
