Subject: downside to not gapping correctly? IP: Logged
Message: I just installed an MSD 6A and the blaster coil and was in such a hurry to go drive it afterward I totally forgot and left the plugs at .45. I've read people going from anywhere up to .60. Are there any negative effects of having a smaller gap?

Message: No.
The larger gapping, which the MSD6A with a blaster coil can do, allows for a bigger spark and therefore a better ignition of the fuel.
Just remember to do it soon to take full advantage of your new MSD ignition.

Message: Just, I want to say it felt more powerful. It had some more pep. The truck certainly seems to run smoother I will say that. Very satisfied with this mod. Hardest part was figuring out where to install it all.

Message: Try the AP3923 at .060 if you have the reg plugs
do not go behond .050
a smaller gap with higher volts will run hotter
you need to open the gap

Message: .45 is around 7/16 and .60 is just shy of 5/8ths. Why would you gap them so big, or is that a typo??? and you meant .045 and .060 which is way different.

Message: Slopehead, The MSD puts a 40,000 to 45,000 volt spark out of the coil depending on which coil you use with the MSD. The hotter spark jumping a much wider gap improves combustion considerably. Besides if you think .060 is a wide gap, I had a 1981 OLDS Delta 88 with a 307 v8 and 4 barrel carb. that had a .080 gap. One time when my alternator on that car went bad while I was still on the road, I keep driving in an attempt to get home, I drove with the lights off as it was starting to get dark. If I turned off the lights the car wanted to die. I finally made it home, I put a voltmeter across the battery, it was reading 2.5 volts. The GM-Delco high energy was firing across a spark plug gap of 80 thousands with a battery voltage of 2.5 volts, pretty amazing if you ask me. The point here is not to brag on GM, they have their problems. The point is the MSD 6a with the blaster SS coil will jump a gap of a 100 thousands. You may wonder how? I found one of the old AC-Delco plugs in the garage and decided to run a little test, I gapped the plug out to 100 thousands. I disconnected the #1 plug wire on my truck and connected the AC-Delco plug and grounded it. The MSD consistently bridged the gap with a very white hot spark. Remember this was outside the cylinder with no compression, but still it impressed me.
