Subject: 3923's vs Bosch Platinum +4 IP: Logged
Message: 99 CC 2wd V6 Auto; I have all the usual mods that are done on the 6ers.
Long before I found this site I installed the +4's and was very happy with them. But after reading all the hype about the 3923's I installed them.
My first impressions after installing the 3923's was just how erratic my idle was, and at higher rpm's the engine wasn't nearly as smooth. But I thought they "MUST" be making more power, so I lived with them.
Well the 3923's are in the trash and a new set of +4's(#4418) are back in. No more instant idle surge, followed by almost stalling. It fires right up and stays at a smooth consistant idle. At speed the motor is back to the smooth feeling all the way to 5,000 rpm's, with ZERO pinging.
When I took my 3923's out, it was VERY clear that they were running too cold. (yes the motor was at operating temp when I shut it down, so the reading is correct).
Again this is my opinion, on my truck, but I will only run the +4's with the correct heat range from now on.
Almost forgot, my mpg has come up as well over the last 4 fill ups.

Message: Just out of curiousity... what were the 3923s gapped at and were you using the AP or APP?

Message: Gapped at .040 and they were the standard copper core plug. I ran them for 17,000 miles.
Also the main performance difference I notice now with the +4's is the increase in low end power/response (1,500-2,500 rpm's; my most used rpm).

Message: I'm not sure if this would have had anything to do with it, but running autolites, I think they're recommended to be gapped at .045. But last I knew that was because they'd burn too hot...and yours were too cool? Hmmm... maybe one of the more knowledgeable guys can figure out what the problem was...or maybe your truck just didn't take too well to the autolites. That's always possible too... Ah well, whatever works best.

Message: As I said all trucks do not react the same and
droping 1 heat range will effect them.
You should have used the 3924 or extended tip 5224
The 3923 work very well with an aftermarket IGN
like the MSD 6a but there again all trucks do not
react the same to the same mods.
I tried AP5224 in my stock motor with MSD, 48mm
F&B JBA headers and a dynomax 2.5 single out and
they were as white as white could be. Went to the
AP3923 and got a nice tan color.
Another thing that will effedt this is how your
injector sync is set (when your injectors pulse)
I would bet money your sync is way on the - side
I tried the Bosch +4's and they did have good low
end but when you tried to rev they were crap
Before you even try the colder plug you should
have more modes getting more air in and exh out
and read your plugs what you are looking for is a
nice tan color, white to hot you can also change
the temp the plugs run at by gap
The reg 3923 should have been gaped at .035 this
also tells me you may have a weak ign and the
plat 4's are masking the problem
What works for some will not always work for
others, the IAT relocate is the same way some
show improvement in power and gas mileage and
others a loss

Message: I first gapped the 3923's at .035 , ran for about 2,500 miles, than regapped to .040.
My ignition is stock, however I have the NAPA cap/rotor and MSD wires. So I don't think my ignition had anything to do with it, I just think they were too cold on my truck, with all my mods.

Message: Larry..I got a ???
You talk bout injector sync..
I went to dealer.he ran the DRB..I was trying to find why I'm running so Rich..
He mentioned something with the fuel or injectors was like (-4) or .4 not sure would that be injectors..
I got lucky and the did the test for free not sure they will again..
I did change..IAT..IAC..and front O2..
Approx 200miles on 5224's @ .055..Very white..
Could a bad O2 cause the negative thing..
And how to you adjust injector sync??
THANKS....

Message: tazzy,
now with the new o2 and having your fuel ratio
right the 24's may be to hot if they are white.
The injector sync can onlt be changed by rotating
the dist nothing else will change that.
You should move that to the + side
Turn the engine over untill the TDC mark is lined
up with the 0 on the tab and the rotor is pointing
to the #1 wire on the cap.
Now look straight down over the top of the rotor
and you will see the button centor is behind the
line on the pickup plat marked cyl
center the rotor over the line and you will be
right near 0 turning the dist counterclockwise
will move towards + side line the edge of the
rotor button with the line and you will be around
+2 to 3 and you will notice the diff in how your
truck runs.
when rotating the motor only go clockwise do not
back up if you over shoot. and push lightly
counterclockwise on the rotor to remove any play
with your finger than set.
The dist bolt is 1/2 inch and a pain to get to
