Subject: Engine dies please help IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys
I have a little problem that is becoming a major pain in the rear. 1998 3.9l 54000 miles I have changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, less then 6000 miles ago. Body lift 3" suspension 3", checked battery its good, new air cleaner, and replaced the iac about 1000 miles or less ago.
And the engine will still just die when I let off the gas but only sometimes some days it will be fine others I have to sit and rev it up for a while before I can let off the gas and it stays running. Sometimes it will be fine in the morning and start acting up at night and visa versa I cant find anything wrong I dont know what else to look at. I have done everything the past post have offered and the result is still the same I think I have it beat and it does it again. By the way I am not getting a mil light so I have not checked the codes, will the computer store codes and not give you a mil light?
Thanks again for any help
Chris

Message: check your fuel presure,
When these pumps begain to go they will act up
after they run a while and get hot than run
intemitently.
40 to 50 pounds
Does it do it more often with the fuel level under
half full, a full tank of gas will keep the pump
cool. the pump is in the gas tank

Message: If the fuel pressure is low, you will also see a problem with long crank times on cold starts. (had that on my '97 a while ago). If the batt is bad, or the voltage regulator is over charging, you can check your codes without an expensive trip to the shop. Put your truck in neutral and cycle the key 3 times quickly. After about 10 seconds, your odometer will display the last code registered with the computer. If the code is 12, you have a battery/charging problem.

Message: Check the throttle body, make sure to clean the bores and throttle plates. The grime can build up causing this problem.

Message: First off thanks to everyone for responding!
I did not mention that I have checked to tb everything looked clean. I will try to get a codes checked today I have a 98 so I think I have to use a scan tool I can get my hands on one with out to much trouble. As far as cold or hot it doesnt seem to matter. And it sometimes happens on a full tank yesterday just before I posted I got gas and it happened while leaving the gas station. But it also happened in the yesterday morning with the fuel light on. I am not sure how to check the fuel pressure but I can figure that one out.
If anyone has any other advice please let me know and thanks to all of you who have helped I will check the things previously mentioned in your post tonight and let you all know.

Message: Chris,
I have a 98, v6 stickshift, mine has intermittent stalling also. Mine seems to do it more with engine temp. When it's cold, wil idle fine, as it warms up, it goes thru a stalling faze, then after it tries that trick, it will idle again just fine. It's like a old bull, tries a few tricks to toss ya off, then just settles down and takes my punishment.!
I replaced the coolant temp sensor and it was fine for about a week or two. Now it's up to its old tricks again. I'd pull my hair out, but I'm already bald.
I'm leaning towards doing the IAT cleaning to see if that helps.
Good luck!

Message: Well last night I was still having my problem so I replaced the battery and in doing so I noticed that the + side battery cable terminal was very bad so I replaced that and everything seemed fine this morning I will keep you guys posted. I do have another question though if the truck is running fine when it dies how could it be the battery because once a vehicle is running you can disconnect that battery and it will continue to run. So wouldn't it still run even if the battery is bad?

Message: If still happening.
Not sure how it is on newer , but 95 has EGR
controlled by 'oxygen ' sensor .
Must have something similar , on 95 the EGR valve
and "sensor " are accessible on passenger side
rear of engine . 3 "vacuum " lines attached to
"sensor " If "sensor " is {contaminated ) from
exhaust , it throws things out and computer is unable to compensate enough , therefore engine stalls . Another indicator of this fault is
slightly higher fuel consumption..

Message: If the batt is weak the volts will drop at idle
and low rpm. The more you have drawing the worse
it will be
That is 1 reason it there to avoid a voltage drop
When you have low volts all the sensors read screwy
