Subject: COLD STARTING IP: Logged
Message: I HAVE A 2000 DAKOTA QUAD WITH A 3.9 V6 ENGINE. IT HAS APPROXIMATELY 33K MILES. MY PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN THE TEMPERATURE GETS COLD (APPROX 30 F OR LESS), THE ENGINE WILL TURN OVER, BUT DIES IMMEDIATELY! THIS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL YOU FEATHER THE GAS PEDDLE TO KEEP IT RUNNING...ALMOST LIKE THE OLD DAYS WHEN THE AUTO CHOKE WASN'T WORKING! ONCE THE ENGINE GETS GOING ON ITS OWN (APPROX 1 -2 MINUTES) IT WILL DRIVE FINE THE REST OF THE DAY. I HAVE HAD IT BACK TO THE DEALER A NUMBER OF TIMES, BUT THEY CAN'T SEEM TO GET IT TO REPEAT, AND THE PROBLEM DOESN'T SHOW UP ON THE OBD COMPUTER....ANYBODY HAVE A CLUE WHAT THE HECK THE PROBLEM COULD BE?

Message: Sounds like 2 things...
More than likely, the battery like bemoore said. Otherwise, maybe the IAC?

Message: yeah sounds like the iac. my 98 3.9 does the same thing, every now and then and i have to clean the iac with carb cleaner and it works great for about 8,000 miles.
sometimes it would stall when i put it in gear also
good luck

Message: The dealer acted as though I was from another planet....never heard of such a thing....just then a mechanic walked in and questioned what was wrong...first thing out of his mouth was get a new battery...I asked him where the hell he has been for the last three months while when I kept bringing in the truck for the same cold starting problem ......it appears that the new battery fixed the problem...thanks dodgedakotas!!!!
