Message: I have 3 Questions, may sound dumb, but...
At bottom of MSD 6a descrip page on summit it says..."You can trigger the MSD 6A using breaker points, a magnetic pickup or the output of an electronic amplifier."
Copy of descript:
Vendor: MSD Ignition
Product Line: MSD Ignition Control Units
Finish: Red
More horsepower from complete combustion.
MSD-6A Ignition Control
The MSD 6A ensures complete combustion for your street machine or hard working truck. MSD 6A's high energy multiple sparks provide quicker ET's, easier starting, reduced plug fouling, more power and improved fuel economy. The MSD 6A will work with virtually any vehicle with a 12-18 volt electrical system. You can trigger the MSD 6A using breaker points, a magnetic pickup or the output of an electronic amplifier.
What does that mean?
I know it will have instructions with it and I can ask later if I have a problem, but I'm curious and want to make sure there's nothing else I'll need when I get it and Blaster 2, so I can put them on ASAP.
Also, I was looking on All For Trucks, as I got an email coupon good for free ship and $25. off a 125+ purchase.
I have to call on price, but when looking up MSD 6a, it asked for odd or even firing order and a different MSD 6a came up for each. Summit doesn't ask this. I know my firing order is 165432...this is considered even, right?
What's up with this?

Message: Here is one place to look for information:
http://www.speedtweaks.ca/tipsandtricks.php#IgnitionMSD
Your older 88 Dak may not need the wiring harness for the coil, and you can always do that by hand anyway.
I think you want the regular MSD 6a for V6 and V8 motors as the "even fire" one is for a GM "even fire" V6.
Take care of that nice 88!

Message: Thanks a bunch whitedakota2,
Speedtweaks tends to have a lot of info for the newer and mag engines. Not a lot for mine, but I'll check out the MSD info.
Thanks for clearing the fire order part up for me. I had never heard much about odd & even. That's what I get for trying to save a few bucks, confusion, LOL.
I'll definatly be trying to take care of my baby, thanks!

Message: The tach adapter was needed on my 2000 Dak..because after installing the MSD system I threw a code "mil" light..
Cant remember the exact code but it was coil volt to high or low i think..so the tach adapter was needed to send the proper signal to the PCM..Thats how I understood it..
Larry..will be able to be more exact..

Message: Diane, If you follow the instructions provided by Tazzy, you shoudn't have any problems. The pickup in your distributor is what triggers your MSD-6a. If you had system with points it would do the same thing. I think the MSD-6a will come with a complete set of instructions. I looked at Tazzy's instructions again. Those are for the Gen 2 Dakota in stead of Gen 1. The orange and black wires that connect to the coil would bolt the same as the connections going to the small nuts on either side of the coil you have mounted on the firewall. I believe the orange wire goes to plus (+) side of the coil and the black goes to the minus(-) side of the coil.

Message: i,m not sure on msd,but on jacobs ignition
you need a trigger to tell the computer to fire the fuel pump, because of the hall effect dist.
i think msd uses something to do the same.

Message: Tazzy, I checked the MSD site and was about to put up a link for Diane. But I see that you beat me to the punch.
http://www.msdignition.com./pdf/pdf20.pdf
It shows the same thing that you have you put in your first diagram. Guess I need to learn a thing or two about HTML.

Message: Thank you all so much. Your a great bunch of guys for sure. I hadn't looked at the first diagram real close, seen that tach input and wondered about it. So that isn't acually for the tachometer I put in right? I just hook it to the new coil like I have it already?
Looking at the new diagram, it's gonna be easy enough to hook it up. I don't see anything that looks hard about it. I'll also check out the link.
Thank you all again!!
I can't hardly wait to get it. Truck runs so much better just removing the air pump, I can't wait to feel the differance with the MSD set up.
How ya been Vern?

Message: Diane,
Just use your 2 existing coil wires check with volt meter
while cranking motor over disconnected from coil if
using stock coil not which is which on coil + -
1 will read a constant voltage on off to small red wire
1 will pulse that is signal to white wire
Big red 12 volt always on
Big black ground
it will not drain batt has no draw untill
activated by power on red wire
Orange + side of coil
Black - side of coil
You Tach will work fine all you are doing is
picking up exsisting coil signal
That's it and it will work fine no tack adapter or
other wires needed to run the 6a box

Message: I'm not to sure about the 88..
but most Dodge products I've worked on..The upper control arm has 2 hold down points..
lossen both and Caster camber Angles can be adjusted..
I*'ve seen lots of So called alignment techs tell people caster is not adjustible.Thats cause there just LAZY..It can be a Bit#h to get all angles good..
I.E. try and get camber in spec..caster moves and likewise..
Caster will not cause Tire wear..It's For steering control..It will cause pulls..

Message: YES you are correct in a perfect world this is exactly how it is set up and no this is easy. My problem is that on the gen1 4x4 their is no slot and the bolts are actually large rivets the odd thing hear is that if you look at the them the shanks on the rivets are threaded. After looking at them today i'm thinking that if i removed thies i could grind a slot in the upper control arm pearch and then use hardened steel bolts in thier place. Reason behind this is the fact that the adjustment is achieved by moving the control arm rod in and out but the slots are on the pearch NOT on the rod like a 2wd set up.

I'd like to see..

Steve,
Try getting Wadak's attention on this. He may have run across the problem. He has Gen1's and knows a lot about them.
