I was wondering how far you can push a 3.9 before you begin to cause damage...how long can you hold the pedal to the metal when you are racing before you cause problems? Does a lot of hard takeoffs cause a lot of damage? I would like a definition of what might "F**K it up in the end". EX: RPM's , and Estimated Time Racing because I was on a 2 lane HWY and wanted to see what it would do in about 1/2 to 3/4 mile. I did this 2 times. When I got home ( 1 mile ) I looked under the hood and noticed that the exhaust manifold was glowing...Did I push the truck to a engine damaging point or is that normal?

That's just warming up. Check your exhaust for a clogged cat or muffler.

I run mine a WOT a few times every other week. I let it shift by itself. My 3.9 goes up to 4500 RPMs with no problems. 160000+ miles and I don't worry. I've done at least 1+ miles at WOT. Problem is the tranny wont shift into OD. This limits the truck to less than 4K RPMs due to gearing.

If your tranny won't go into OD, shouldn't it run at higher RPMs...I know when i maxed out about a year ago I had OD off and was at about 4800 RPMs @ 105 mph. The other day I was driving not really to max out, but to get up pretty fast. This time I had OD on and I was under 4000 RPMs @ 100 mph when I let off and coasted back down to the normal speed limit.

if I had 2400 degee gas flowing out my exhaust in large quantities my exhaust ports would glow red too. Double intedre intended. Champion Spark plug has distrubuted pictures for years of various engines ran at full throttle and load, taken in a darkened room showing red and even yellow glowing manifolds, for the short time you did it most likely no harm was done.
for gchemist it has absolutely nothing to do with mufflers or cats as some of these pictures I saw was in the mid '60's long before cats, and large capacity mufflers were used in Champion's engine lab.

I believe that 6200 rpm is the limit in stock form, these engines make peak power around 4600 rpm+/-. You didn't say how many miles are on it or how well it has been maintained. All of these are factors, but usually Chrysler engines are durable and will live thru things that cause other brands to fail. But like they say,"mess with a rattlesnake long enough and you will eventually get bit".

My truck has 105,000 on it and it has been well maintained. I have no cat and a single 40 series flowmaster, and drop in K&N.

Banks, In your opinion, how loud is the 40 series flowmaster on your truck. I have a 1997 3.9 dak, I opted for the 70 series, I wanted it fairly quiet to keep peace with the neighbors. I think the 40 series would have been two loud for me.

I don't know,50 to 100k miles? It's hard to say, engines on a dyno or stationary engines can have their manifolds glow when run hard. Older engines were done at about 100k miles, but these should go much further. Just keep the maintenance up and address any noises or problems as soon as they appear.

wadak,
the flowmaster is kinda loud in the city and draws too much attention. It also has a terible "drone" in the cab. Mine is not a delta flow so, If I had it to do over again i would get the delta flow.

mark green 92,
the only problems the engine has are a ticking valve in the mornings and the rattling timing chain.

You should be fine with the stock rev limiter in place. Any higher and you would want to swap your push rods and springs. Stock springs float like mad around6k RPM.

Absolutely! Even in the 4000's, the stock valvetrain could use some help. The V6 is based on 318 internals, and the V8 smallblock has always been good to 62-6300 rpm

340 six pack motor would turn 6500 right from
the factory

Here's a hint,

As I was told by Bruce Bridges of Flowmetrics F&B
Throttle body designer owner and builder of the
F&B Throttle Bodies one day on the phone discussing
throttle bodies.

We have had many discussions on the phone about the
magnum engines he runs a built 360 R/T

Bruce is a very cool guy to talk with when he has
the time he is usualy very busy but once you get
him going your ear will be sore

"Drive It Like You Just Stole It"

Every time you take your truck out for the next 10
rides do at least 3 WOTS wide open throttle runs
find a place to do it.

This will let the computer learn the complete rpm
range, trim fuel and adjust timing to run a steadier
Air/Fuel Ratio through out the entire rpm range.

Your trucks performance and gas mileage will both
improve, and you will gain low end power

The same thing I have been telling people for
years just not quite the same way

I just tell people you need to blow the cob web's
out once in a while and your truck will run better

I agree to that.

thats why sometimes you will see grandpa go WOT on the interstate and you will see black stuff fly out of the pipes.

or if its an really old car and have some 16 year floor it for the first time ever.

when i bout my 98 3.9 dak it was pretty weak and after a few WOT's i started to notice a power increase. it would top out around 130 or so. But when i added the supercharger my computer went wacko.. It didnt know what to do. i had to go to a specialist to get it fixed. but now a WOT is much more touchy and with the 270hp istead of the 200 stock and 3.73 gears i can do about 150-155mph as guestimated by my friends cobra mustang. and i beleive i was getting somthing like 5300 or maybe 5000 RPM's so you can get quite a bit of speed but the rpm's go up but not in sequence..

hold on a second, are you saying that the redline is 6200 rpm? no thats not right, the redline starts at 4600 rpm. if you get it that high, you will damage your engine if you do it on a consistent basis, like every day or at every stop light.
