Subject: Valve Sticking help?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hoping someone here can help me. I have an 01 SLT dakota with a V6 engine, 71K mostly highway miles. I like the truck alot, but it has developed a farily loud ticking sound at idle, more pronounced at start up. If I add any RPMs to the engine, the sound stops, but comes right back when I take my foot off the gas. The truck runs fine, no other problems to speak of. My guess is that it is a valve sticking, but have no concrete proof. Any ideas or suggestions? If its a valve, how expen$ive is this gonna be? Any help would be great. Thanks!

It could be a collapsed lifter (caused by chunks of crud in your oil), the timing chain tensioner, bent pushrod or even an exhaust leak. Check for broken studs on the exhaust manifolds. Also, eliminate the possibility that one of the accessories like the alternator isn't causing the sound or that the serpentine belt tensioner isn't the source.

Is either the performance or gas mileage suffering considerably? Sometimes it's really hard to trace the source of a sound. I had an exhaust leak on my 97 318 and I was sure the sound was coming from inside the engine but my bud whos a mechanic found the broken stud and fixed it and the sound went away.

Hope this helps.

Bend down in front of the truck while its idling
and I am sure you will hear it plain as day

Timing chain rattle a very common complaint on the
V6 motor
